1990 Si 4ws review and photos from a Porsche guy

Hello,
I introduced myself in another thread and wanted to update this group with my review of the car with some photos now.

Readers digest history: Car was given to me running, but severely damaged in the right rear quarter. Car was very dirty, sun faded, peeling, and overall neglected. Since it was free, as is my labor, I went to work. New quarter panel installed, new paint, interior deep cleaned, new stereo, and lots of trips to the local wrecking yards for misc. parts resulted in this:

Now for the review. I built this car as a daily driver so that I can take the mundane wear and tear off of my Mercedes ML430 SUV. Besides, at 16mpg around town, while good for a V8 suv, was getting expensive. I have been driving the car for 2 full months now. I have resolved a couple of oil leaks from the distributor and the cam position sensor, fully tuned it and switched it to full synthetic fluids. Replaced the brake master and fully flushed the brake fluid, flushed the coolant and made sure every system in the car worked properly.

I really enjoy driving it around town. It is not by any means fast, but it is quick and zippy. The PO replaced the long block B21 with a B20, but retained all of the B21 (OBD1) peripherals. It is comfortable, even for a big guy like me (I am known as Sasquatch). It has been getting a solid 26-27 mpg around town.

Yesterday I grabbed my dad for a run into the mountains. Keep in mind that this review is being written from a european car nut who has owned and raced Porsches for almost 20 years.

I was very impressed with the handling of the car. No matter how hard I pushed it in the corners it changed directions very quickly and remained perfectly flat with almost zero noticeable body roll. It reminded me of a well sorted 914. Neutral and flat in the corners, but make sure you keep your speeds up as there simply is not enough power to accelerate much out of the corners. The shifting was quick and accurate with no missed shifts and no need to double clutch it while downshifting near redline. Just a heel tap to raise the revs as to not unsettle the chassis.

Front wheel drive is taking some to get used to. I will always find it less than ideal in any sort of performance driving and will never consider any front wheel drive car a true "sports car". That said, it did a very admirable job with very little perceivable torque steer.

While climbing a long 6% grade, the small motor really showed it's shortcomings. It held 65mph, but had little left to accelerate. Passing on short passing zones took a lot of pre planning and timing to make up for its lack of power. I can totally understand why motor swaps are so popular. With a chassis this good, having an additional 50-60 reliable horsepower would be welcomed.

All in all I am quite pleased with this car and will continue to drive, maintain and massage out its issues over the coming years. It does not need much, and I am having fun with it. Thank you to all the contributors to this and other Prelude forums for all the sharing of your knowledge which has helped me resurrect this car.

I have NO idea. They were on the car when I got it. Tires are near new so I am going to live with them for a while then put something better suited on there.

Re: 1990 Si 4ws review and photos from a Porsche guy

I am about ready to order the last major run of parts that will get this car 100% done. All coolant hoses, WP, timing belt kit, accessory belts, 2 axles and shocks all the way around. I am keeping it stock with just some standard Gabriel shocks. Once that is all done I can just drive and maintain it without worrying.

So far it has used/leaked no oil, does not overheat at all, AC blew nice and cool after converting it to R134a and it has been getting between 22-26 mpg in primarily city driving.

Lord willing, in a couple of years I will sell it to someone who will appreciate it so I can get back to my passion, Porsches. In the mean time it is a good car and relatively fun to drive.

The 3g Prelude was well ahead of the competion in it's price range.

Good idea on 100% hose swaps.
