S3 blinking ECU reads code 8

Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me find where the vss is located? My speedometer is mechanical, not sure if it changes anything and what's code 8 for a 88 honda prelude 4ws si automatic transmission. Pics or anything would help. Oh and what kind of transmissions would fit with my b20a5 engine it's fuel injected. I'm thinking about replacing it but don't know what trannys would fit.
Thanks in advance

88-89 has the speed sensor in the gauge cluster. If you open the cluster you will see a small wheel with a pick-up sensor at the bottom near the odometer, this is it. It is cable driven from the rear of the transmission under your EGR valve. If the sensor or cable are faulty you will also have a code 17 in the ECU, your speedometer, odometer, and your cruise control wont work also. If you only have a code 8 in the TCU I would be more inclined to suspect wiring or TCU failure. The VSS sends it signal to the ECU and TCU through the same wire most of the way. If I remember correctly it is a white wire with a blue tracer, and you can find the splice where it splits between the TCU and ECU in the harness about 1 ft away from the TCU. The splice should be wrapped in marine grade tar backed gray electrical tape.

Any transmission from any 88-91 prelude will fit your car if you're doing a 5sp swap, but only the auto's will be a direct fit if you're not. Why are you thinking of changing the trans?

Re: S3 blinking ECU reads code 8

Okay thanks I got the speedometer to work but now it shakes a lot. Would you know what would cause this? I changed the speedometer display as well and it still shakes. When I changed the speedometer cable, I only replace the half that runs into the cluster and that got it working but like I said it shakes but it's accurate. I greased up the connecting sides as well. Do you think it could be the part of the speed cable that connects into the transmission or maybe I didn't tighten it enough??
I'm also thinking of replacing the transmission because it had trouble accelerating when I put it on drive but when I put it on 2 or manual it works perfectly fine so I was thinking of replacing the whole tranny. Any suggestions??

I think the tranny is stuck in third gear but I don't know how to fix it or where to begin to address the problem

Bouncy speedo is usually a dirty sticky, or broken upper cable. remove and clean off your new cable, saturate it with degreaser and run it in and out of the cable housing to clean out any old gummy grease. Wipe the cable clean and dry. Now re lube it with some light grease and reinstall.

Re: S3 blinking ECU reads code 8

sorry, I misread your first post. I thought you said you had a code 8 in your TCU for VSS. After I reread it I got to thinking, the TCU does't through a VSS code. After looking it up, I found that Code 8 is "Fail to shift (stuck in 1st gear or 4th gear). Probable causes; disconnected A/T shift control solenoid valve B connector, Open or short in shift control solenoid valve B wire, Faulty shift control solenoid valve B. Reference page 14-40"

Re: S3 blinking ECU reads code 8

Thank you for the response and link. I have to ask, is the connecting pieces suppose to be clean as in no gunk/grease or have a little grease in it? I can't seem to find this out
Thanks again and but just out of curiosity, do you know where I could buy a tranny at? I see it on eBay but I'm a little iffy about buying online like that?

Re: S3 blinking ECU reads code 8

There maybe some dielectric grease in there to combat corrosion. A clean connection is always a better connection, but some minor gunk wont hurt this connection.

What type of trans are you looking for? Used jap/euro engine suppliers are usually a good spot, many even sell on ebay for convenience, and all carry warranties. You could also post a wanted in ad in the buy/sell section of this forum. You have a few choices if you want to change your gearing too. You can use an F22/23, H22, or h23 trans, each of which have different gearing.

If I remember correctly:
F22=long gears
H22=mid gears
H23=short gears
