88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

What is the most I can reasonably expect to get for my car?
Needs paint. Has new trans rebuild. Cold air. Dead radio.Original miles (mine).
I haven't driven it in several years so its time to sell it, starts and runs fine.
Don't want to give it away, just want to get most reasonable value for it that will sell in a month or two, no rush. Any best places to post it? Thank you. I live in western NC.

Re: 88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

Demand is rising for these cars among collectors...not the kids mind you, but the mid-life crisis crowd who don't hate the auto version as much as the masses. In fact, some prefer it.

However, prices are not great on a car that is ugly. Less than 100k miles is a good thing.
Your location is not.
You'd get best results selling it at a site seen coast to coast.
Ebay is a decent way.

My guess w/o see-ing it would be $1500-3000 leaning on the lower end.
If it has rust...$1000-1500.

If you can store it a little while longer, you'll see prices rise. Early low mile CRX cars are going for $10-20k now. 2nd gen prelude prices are rising slowly. 3g prices have leveled off. That's what I've seen ebay auctions doing the last 3 years.
It's all about demand vs supply.

Check out this old honda.com and honda roots.com to see some of what I mean.

You're being generous Mike. But I can only speak for local values.

From the description given...needs paint and a new transmission, and no other major problems, you might get $750 to $1200 in my area. The low mileage helps, but it helps much less if the car isn't in good condition. It's also very easy to fake mileage on these cars, so if the car does not look like it has low miles I don't usually believe the seller (not saying you're lying, just in general). Honda transmissions usually run for at least a couple hundred thousand miles, so the fact that yours didn't even make 100k is a red flag. There aren't many people willing to buy a car they can't drive. So the most I think you could get would be $1200. You could possibly get more if 3rd gens are rare in your area and you find the right buyer. But that's not usually how it works out, for me anyway.

If it has rust, it would depend on the amount of rust involved. It could devalue the car just a little or make it almost worthless if it's bad enough. There is really no way to put a value on it until we know the extent of any rust the car might have.

Why does the car need paint? Is it because the clear coat is peeling off? Is it because of collision damage repair? Is it because of rust? Some other reason? These are important questions that you need to answer for us when considering the car's value.

Also, I'm posting from my work computer so I can't see pics. Did you supply any pics of the car, and if so, are they highly detailed? These would help us to give you a value for the car much more than even a detailed description.

Thanks for the wonderful responses. To clear things up it had a stuck solenoid valve in the trans so when it was removed to ge into it I replaced the friction plates with a kit, trans is just fine now. Need paint because its sun baked and a scratch fixed by a shody paint shop is flaking off the size of a dinner plate on rear fender. Miles are all mine minus 20K from original owner.

Re: 88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

That's kind of confusing then, because this morning you said it needed a trans rebuild, and this afternoon you said it's been rebuilt. So that kind of changes things for you. If the only things wrong with the car are the sun baked paint and the radio, then it could be worth the $3000 that Mike estimated. I doubt you'd get much more than that with the paint in that condition.

Just out of curiosity, what color is the car? Also, have you tried to rub/buff the paint, or is it too damaged for that. I've seen some amazing things done with a buffer on old paint.

Re: 88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

I did not say it needed a rebuild trans.
There was a period after needs paint.
New sentence was new trans.
Sorry for misunderstanding.

Re: 88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

Thanks very much for this feedback it is very helpful.
Car is mechanically a well maintained 97k car with nice cold air (r12!)it just has paint issues that wont buff out.( Sitting outside for a long time.) Black in color.
I just could find nothing on Edmunds or other car sites for value.
I'm going to list it at $3K and that would be fine if it sells for that.
Once again thanks for the knowledge.

Re: 88' 2.0Si 4WS Auto 97K Value?

Do some TR3 on the paint. Pep Boys. $10+/-...

^^ before

^^ after

^^ black

The red car was still beading water a year later.
I applied meguires sysnthetic liquid about every 90 days and it looked great each time.

The can says 'not for clear coat', but it's safe to use if you don't leave it on. I applied it 3 times on the red car to get what you see. Let sit overnight, buff off the dust next day, and apply the wax.
Yes, dust. What was oxidation turns into dust using this stuff. Gently wipe it on, say the door, then the fender, wipe off the door, apply to rear quarter, wife off fender, buff door with a cotton cloth, wipe off quarter, buff fender....you see where I'm going...
Paint won't look like brand new if it's real, real oxidized, but after applying a good wax it will look a helluva lot better than you'd ever have imagined. On black mothers california gold synthetic liquid gave me best results.

^^ before

^^ after TR3 and california gold, pre-final buff.

^^ windows, moldings, etc...just not the windshield.

Mike, I got those numbers from auctions on ebay. No idea where the buyers were.
