Single pop under hood while coming to a stop

I have a single pop that occurs right as I come to a stop in my 3rd gen 4ws Si 1991 Prelude. If anyone has had this experience I would like to know what it could be.

Re: Single pop under hood while coming to a stop

Does it come from the front or the back of the car? Does it sound like an engine backfire pop or a mechanical (as in suspension, steering, etc) pop? Do you ever hear it when driving? It could be any one of a lot of different things. Sounds like you need to get it up on a jack and check:
  • Steering Components (Tie Rods, Rack & Pinion)
  • Suspension Parts (Ball Joints, Springs, Control Arm Bushings)
  • Motor Mounts & Fastening Hardware
  • Brake Components (Calipers, Brake Pads, Associated Hardware)

I put Ball Joints in red because I have had some of the cars I have worked on wear out and they would pop when coming to a stop, taking a corner, or accelerating. Under what condition they popped depended on the geometry of each individual cars suspension setup.

If it ONLY does it then, You may also want to take a friend for a ride and they can stick their head out the window and listen for the sound you are hearing when you stop. Or have them drive and you listen. Or have them drive your car and they stop right next to you so you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

One of these actions should lead you to the cause of the pop and then you can search how to tighten, replace, fix, or do whatever is needed.

If you suspect that it's something in the suspension you could always take the car to a reputable alignment shop and have them check it over, if you're not able to diagnose the problem yourself. They can quickly determine if any suspension components are bad. Most shops will do this for free or for a small fee since they figure you will have them do the work if anything needs to be replaced.

Or you could do that... They could probably find the problem in just a couple minutes.
