Icon8 Trouble starting

Im having trouble starting my 90 prelude. It starts up fine cold but if I shut it down and try starting it up within the next 15-20 minutes it wont start. It gets worse the hotter it is outside. It will just crank and crank and try and sputter start sometimes but it wont turn over. Ive already done the main relay and verified that when I try and crank that there is spark at the spark plugs. Also got a new fuel pump. Any suggestions, Im stumped.

Re: Trouble starting

When you say you've done the main relay, what exactly do you mean by that? Did you replace it with a new one, or did you re-touch the solder connections (aka main relay fix)?

Re: Trouble starting

Hey Precious... Wait, that didn't sound right... How about "P90" as a nick-name? Anyways...

I forgot to mention yesterday that sometimes, the resoldering of the Main Relay doesn't fix the issue cause there are also contacts inside there that get carboned up and those would have to be cleaned. Just FYI...

For everyone else, this is what I posted on the other thread he started yesterday before I referred him to come and start one in here...

Nice work on researching (and finding) that the Main Relay sometimes causes this problem. Since you did that already, I think the Igniter Module is what is most likely causing this. Not sure you will be able to find one "New". I just searched a few auto parts sites and all showed it as Unavailable.

I'm no expert on these cars by any means and am just relaying on what I read before about the usual causes of this problem so please do some research to verify. With that said...

You should also repost this in the Tech Talk section of the 3rd Gens. You will get more responses.

Also, do a search on here for Igniter in the 3rd Gen section and you should see a few posts regarding the problems it causes. (No starts when car is hot)

BTW... It is located on the Passenger side (Right Side) front fender well under the hood. and this is what it looks like:

EDIT: Here's one on eBay for $40

Re: Trouble starting

Thank you for the help
Guys! I replaced the main replay with a new one. I did not try to repair it. If I get spark when I crank would it be the igniter module? I smell fuel when I crank as well. I have had this problem for a few months now. I rebuilt the engine from top to bottom and replaced the fuel pump and still have this problem. So it isn't spark fuel air or compression or timing. So I'm really at a loss.

Re: Trouble starting

The ignitor and main relays have similar symptoms when they start to flake out. Since he mentioned that he has spark (assuming during the no-start condition), I looked to the main relay as the issue. Since an ignitor issue is usually intermittent, it's entirely possible that it was working when he checked spark. It's also possible that the spark is not strong enough under compression conditions.

I asked whether he did a main relay fix or replaced it with new precisely because for the reason you mentioned...sometimes it's not a bad solder joint which causes the main relay to fail. Also, I don't know the OP's soldering ability, and it's very possible to make things worse if you don't have good soldering skills.

One thing I would recommend to any 3rd gen owner is to visit junkyards often, especially now that parts are getting harder and harder to find. Grab things like main relays, ignitors, ecu's, cruise control modules, gauge clusters, relays, ignition switches, etc...it's very handy to have known good parts to swap out when troubleshooting. And it's a lot cheaper than buying new parts, only to find that it wasn't causing your problems. I can pick up all of those items for under $100 from my local yards. But prices in your area may vary.

Re: Trouble starting

Normally the EACV won't keep the engine from running. That could be a symptom of another problem, but you might want to go through the troubleshooting flow chart for the EACV in the online service manual. It starts on page 6-176.
