Icon6 What to get?

Hello.I'm from Canada and looking in to getting a 3rd gen prelude for my first car and make it a daily driver.

I am thinking of a 90-91 with 4WS as a base. Was a 4WS with ALB version offered to the CDM ? Or was that strictly the JDM? Would I have to swap from an ALB version if I wanted 4WS with ALB? How can you tell if it has ALB's, is it on the badge at the back?

Which stock engine would be best for an DD'er? The b21a1 or b20a5? I have heard some people using parts from the 21a1 on the 20a5, would that make an even more reliable combo?

I'm more concerned with drive-ability and less with HP but would a swap offer better reliability/repair-ability?

As its an older car I'm well expecting the need for an overhaul to change hoses and fluids at the very least. but are there any other concerns with these cars? Are windshields still easily attainable? They don't seem to survive too long here with all the gravel we drop when it snows.

I see there is a special tool for 4ws alignments, any other tools specific for this car?

I would also like to look at maxing out the car.
Does anyone know have a list of all options/accessories that were available specifically to the CDM? Did we get heated mirrors, rear wipers, rear fogs ect?
I presume power windows and locks at least XD

Any common upgrades for drive-ability?

Is this the best service manual?

Re: What to get?

Wow! That's some list of questions...and quite the wish list.

Hope you aint in a hurry because the car you seek may not be found for a long long time.

3g preludes end up in canada as the last leg of the journey to the great junkyard in the sky.
The good ones get put away in the fall until spring. And they are usually in the family for life, unless the grandkids want a few $ from grandpas estate.

Re: What to get?

Haha yes! I'm mostly looking for info on whether 4ws and alb can exist together, and then what optional accessories were available to Canada.

I don't expect to get everything in one fell swoop.

I do have a bead on a pretty nice 91 SR with a rebuilt 2.1 and 4ws at least (sadly automatic) but I haven't asked for more details yet

It is a lot of questions to pack into your first post.

I'm not real familiar with Canadian models, but I have read that the only 3rd gens that were available with ALB and 4WS were JDM Si States models. But please don't quote me on that.

You can identify if it's ALB by looking near the fuse box in the engine bay. If it's ALB there will be a brake fluid reservoir some brake lines coming from it. I'll try to find a pic if I get a chance. As far as swapping goes, it would be much easier to swap the 4ws system onto a 3rd gen with ALB than to swap ALB onto a 4ws lude.

Edit: Look at post #3 in this link. You'll see the ALB "stuff" in the location I mentioned...
http://www.preludepower.com/forums/s...d.php?t=355570

Either engine works well for a DD'er. I've owned both and used both for that purpose. The b20a5 will give you longer life before it starts to use oil though. The b21a1 has different cylinder sleeves than the b20a5, and they tend to wear the piston rings more quickly than the steel sleeves in the b20a5. I would say the b20a5 is more desirable, but I wouldn't pass over a b21a1 equipped lude if the price was right.

I'm not sure about the availability of windshields. I had one replaced about 4 years ago, and they had no problem finding one. You'd have to check with a local glass shop.

There is a special 4ws alignment tool. You can buy a 4ws tool from a member on preludepower.com. Look in stickys at the top of the 3rd gen section. Other than that, you can do pretty much everything else with "normal" tools that you would use for working on any car.

When you say you want to max out the car, are you talking about options, or performance? Huge difference there. As far as I know, the most you could get on any 3rd gen in north America would have been (besides the standard power moon roof, power antenna, and cruise control) power windows, power door locks, AC, armrest, 4WS or ALB, spoiler and fog lights. Some of these were standard on certain models. Other things like rear wiper, digital climate control, headlight squirters, bumper pole, fog light covers, and folding heated mirrors, among other options I may have missed, were only available in other domestic markets.

As far as common upgrades go, check out www.prelude3g.com, or the FAQ sticky at the top of the 3rd gens section over on preludepower.com.

Yes, that Helm's manual is a good one.

Hope that helps.
