Power steering pump question

My car was losing power steering fluid as it would overflow from reservoir. Everything I read said this is nearly always due to air leak into the pump. So, I got a seal kit and put it in. Now, when I try to spin the pulley, it turns very hard. If I back off the four little bolts holding the assembly together, the pulley will turn without much resistance. I don't have that much experience with this **** to know what is normal. So I am reluctant to put the pump back on until I know it is ok. Anyone have any tips? Thanks in advance!

Re: Power steering pump question

Air in the line causes foam in the tank.

Go to Prelude3g and download a pdf service manual or go to prelude bible and look up the torque specs for re-assembly.
My thought is if it's difficult to turn by hand it may be too tight...but it shouldn't spin like a bicycle wheel either.

Glad you did your own gasket repair.

When you restart your car, there will be air in the line. Unfortunately the pump compresses a large bubble into millions of tiny ones..more foam.

The way we un-aired my sons was to put the cars front wheels on jack stands, run the engine and turn the wheels back n forth lock to lock. A few minutes of that at first lead to foam rising in the tank. But after a few tries it quit trying to boil over. If memory serves it took a few hours of normal driving over a few days before it quit foaming.

Re: Power steering pump question

I figured it out! I have a shop manual for a Gen2 Prelude and looked at schematic. It isn't quite the same, but very similar to Gen3. I had the plungers in the wrong cavities. Reversed 'em, and put it together, and the shaft spins fine.
