How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

Welp I had no idea so I took it out upwards. I wasn't too caring so I broke a few things but due to being a (carb) motor and (auto) transmission and both bad I really didn't care. Job was done in 4 hours 30 minutes (Take note I was by myself.) Longest part was probably removing the axels because the ball joints from the steering rack were doing their usual "not wanting to come out" show and having the Prelude fall of the jack stands was also not on the list. Anyway first time the Prelude's been out of the garage since January.

Picking up from where I last left it (head removal last month)

Picking it back up after it fell of its jackstands

Nearing finish

Job Done

Outside time

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

How did you drop the car?
Why did you have it on jack stands while plucking the motor?

^^ I knew something was missing when this car arrived.
I helped my son swap in an H23.
In the background is a 91 that's a 5 year ground up project in year 2

^^ nah, seriously, one chain on each side

^^ it was out in about an hour
One crank at a time, slowly but surely it popped out.
Putting back in was a trip. But one crank at a time it was back in.

^^ it certainly helps to have help.
And plenty of light. Day or night the head mounted flashlight is useful.
Many folks use a balance bar to aid in changing angles of the motor as you pluck it out or re-install.

^^ stickerz help.

Final pluck involved placing 2x4's in the cavity between the motor and the car. Set motor back down, which greatly changed the angle (in a good way). Re-biased chains and did the final pluck.

^^ note the 2x4's

^^ angle before 2x4's

^^ angle after

^^mans best friends
4 wheel stand and a dog. Petting the dog every so often causes you to take breaks and think.

^^ we'd put the car away each evening

Good time to spruce up that engine bay

^^ before

^^ after

When my son came home with an 01 that had a failing motor, I looked under the hood and said "ew ew, I wanna do the engine bay...please please please?" I'd never restored a motorless engine bay before. Simple green, a toothbrush, a spray bottle of water, some satin black krylon duo and about 6 hours later it looked like new. Hoses, connectors, metal areas, and the firewall got a good scrubbing. Creative masking and careful spray got it looking great in no time with the engine outta the way.
The entire project took about 6 months all told. But 6 months and 10,000 miles later there've been zero issues.

^^ the 91 before the 01 interupted it.
It's my oldest sons car now. But I paid a shop $700 to swap a B21 engine into it in '013 while I worked 6-7 12 hr days that summer.
Now it sits in a garage while I focus on a 97 and at some point my son's 93 is going to get some TLC also.

^^ the S&SPOG prelude herd.

TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

I had it on jack stands to get the wheels off to remove the axles. During it I raised it to remove the jack stands and I got one side off but then the driver side mount broke and the motor jumped up and it dropped the car and it flipped off the other side jack stand and the center jack I had underneath it.
Balance bar and fender mats, I should definitely invest in those. I've figured out that installing motors and transmissions from the bottom is easier compared to the top.

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

I have always pulled engines out the top on 3rd gens. I would add pics but I can't find them. Those of you who have posted pics should pick up one of these... http://www.amazon.com/Load-Leveler-E.../dp/B001P5UWUW
Makes pulling an engine much easier because you can adjust the angle without repositioning the chains.

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

Only regret will putting my dum@$$ back in the position of needing one. lol

But...still got 2 cars in the pipeline. One has an old zero oil burning B21 with 180+ miles, and the other, no idea how many miles or how bad it was abused....but a compression test will tell the tale to keep going on that one or do a swap.

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

Look what I found on Harbor Freight

3/4 Ton Load Leveler

2 Ton Load Leveler

But I'm sure you knew about these already!

I have the 3/4 ton one. Works great! I used it to pull a Chevy 350/TH350 and then puck up a Pontiac 455/TH400 so it should be more than enough for these "lightweight" aluminum engines.

Re: How do you guys remove your Prelude's Motor?

Mine is from Harbor Freight, but I don't remember the load capacity or brand (it's red). I've had it for about 10 years now. I've used it several times, as has my son and a couple of his friends. The link I posted was just an example of what I was referring to because I was too lazy to look for mine, take a picture, and post that here.

Kool, I did that post from my work computer... I didn't think about using my phone cause not only am I blocked from any photo share websites on my work network, my cell phone signal is practically nill, unless I step out of the building. I copied those pic links directly from the HF website.

My hoist is a 2 ton, as long as I keep the arm all the way in. I lose a half ton for every position I extend the arm, so a 3/4 ton is fitting , although...

I COULD use a longer leveler so I may have to trade up!
