RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

Hello Everyone,

I know a LOT of us go to Rock Auto to buy parts for out 3RD GEN. Well, I got an email from them this morning stating that they are doing a "Warehouse Close-Out" on parts for 3RD GEN. I don't know if this is a ploy for people to buy more parts or if they are genuinely trying to be helpful by providing this information.

I also don't know which parts are specific for the 88-89 & 90-91's, but I know a LOT of them are interchageable.

With this said, Those of you who stock up or were waiting to buy certain parts, may want to look at this list and see if any of these items are something you are going to need.

RockAuto Auto Parts

Hope this is helpful!

Definitely oughta get any sensors and other 'specialty' items while you can...
Brake pads? Maybe stock up because they're cheap.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

Thanks for the heads-up Tony. I would be a little more concerned if I still had a 3rd gen. I'll be sure to pass this info on to my son though since he is now the proud owner of my car.

Some of the things in that list are definitely hard to come by anywhere else, so if Rock Auto is discontinuing them, it's just one more nail in the 3rd gen coffin.

You done playing with Preludes?
I mean directly as I'm sure there'll be some sort of advisory role for the new owner as applicable..being your son and all...the car will certainly come up at the thanksgiving gathering and what-not...

I'm done with them for now. Who knows what the future will hold. And since I work with my son, and he comes over at least weekly, there will be plenty of opportunity to mentor him. Plus, I actually enjoy working on the thing, so I'll be happy to help him if the need arises.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

I helped my son work on his (formerly my) 3g car yesterday. I gotta be honest, I don't miss it.
I enjoyed walking around it, noting the beautiful lines and posture of it...peering into the subtle shades of tan cloth vs the shiney black shell, then the spacious, like new trunk and all that.
But when we opened that hood...and all that stuff in there all crammed together...I was thinking 'geez I'm glad this aint my problem anymore'.
It's in mothball mode these days but he took it out for a quick drive to move the wheels and stuff. I didn't even ask to drive it...maybe in the fall.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

I did a year ago Mike. But I had yet to reach that "drive more than you fix it" ratio.

She looks darn good in storage...a gigantic hot wheel car so-to-speak. And for some reason I don't mind tearing up my hands working on it when it belongs to somebody else...
Maybe it's like grandkids..ya play with 'em for a while and when they have a poopy diaper ya hand 'em back to your kid?

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

Now I didn't have 4ws...

Yeah items for the 3g are becoming like Vega parts it seems as more and more end up at the 'pic-n-pay'...such a shame, because unlike the Vega, these cars changed the way people thought of compact cars back then.
Handled like a go kart, rode like a much bigger (read heavier) automobile.

And to this day they are still one of the sexiest cars (imo) on the road, at the mall or wherever you see one.

There's also the history I have with this car. I've owned it since 2007, rebuilt it from the dead, both engine and body, and spent 100's of hours working on it. Plus all the stuff you said.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

I struggled with the decision for a couple years actually. The lude has been sitting in the garage a lot more than it's been driven, and it needs to be out on the road. It couldn't have gone to a better home, and I know that I can drive it any time I need a 3rd gen fix.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

Stories like that bring tears to my eyes... I kinda miss my 78 Skylark... Owned it since I was 19 in 1993. Mechanically, she was sound. I replaced EVERYTHING... Pretty much a new car, but the body was getting cancerous... Too much time on the beach in San Diego and then Corpus Christi. I'm not much of a body-work guy... I could figure it out if I took the time, but it was time to let her go. At least my 70 (soon to be) GSX Clone is garaged, although I haven't had the time to work onher any cause my time and money have been going into my 3G.

With that said, my 3G is my daily driver and I am happy that my driving to fixing ratio is pretty high (Knock on wood). Just need to replace my front suspension/steering/cv shafts, then get an alignment. I heard my clutch throwout bearing "complaining" so it may be time to replace that and my clutch.

I actually listed out all of the cars I've owned in my life the other day, which came to 40. Of all those cars there are only 3 of them that I really miss, not including the lude. My first, a 66 Chevelle, a 74 S3 Laguna, and a 2004 GTO. The lude is probably at the top of that list because of all the time I spent on it, but it's definitely not the rarest or most valuable, LOL.

I have some unsolicited advice for you when you replace the clutch. You'll do yourself a big favor if you replace the rear main seal while you have the trans and engine separated. Also, if you pull the engine and trans at the same time it would be a great time to replace all of the small coolant hoses while the engine is out. They are a bugger to get to otherwise.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

Thanks for the advise on the Rear Main Seal... I will DEFINITELY take care of that... As for the coolant hoses... I replaced ALL of them when I replaced the head! ;)

Yeah, I have owned a lot of "lame" cars due to being broke and getting married early. I still want to list them out, just to show my kids and such... The 3G is actually one of my "High School Dream Cars" so it has to be the 3rd coolest/favorite car I have owned. The 70 GSX will be my first Fav once I am done with it and the 78 my 2nd Fav.

A big factor in why the fix it to drive ratio was as it was.
Basically I bought a car the po grabbed off a tow truck that was headed for the junkyard! He fixed it via new cylinder head, then a few months later B21 ring failure caused him to choose a civic race car over the prelude.

Now all this was happening while I worked 6-7 days a week..and was restoring a 97 prelude/money pit.

I bought the 91 and paid a guy to swap in a used motor. I had him replace the timing belt/water pump etc and nothing else. Bad idea! The motor was leak free in the previous (auto tranny) car. But soon leaks started popping up like kettle corn. Combine that with the typical 3g woes like cooling fans and other stuff that made driving it a crap shoot...

This weekend my son and I spoke of just plucking the motor/tranny out and doing the job right...rear main seal, oil pan, all them little hoses (which are discontinued btw, or at least the 'shaped' ones) so we have accumulated what oem stuff we could find, acquired 'similar' shaped hoses from part stores and figure late this year go about tearing into the project full on.

I kept the broken B21 for parts because of how hard it is to find a lot of parts that were exclusive of the B21

We picked parts from maybe 25 in about 2 years and only 1 had a B21.
Meanwhile my 97 is about 50% done, he has an 01 project going and a 93..and there is a rumor that a Supra may be entering the herd.

Re: RockAuto Warehouse Close-Out

No details on the Supra yet. Just heard a rumor of one a fellow says he's tired of dumping money into...it's been his daily driver since new, so if it's a big money pit...got 2 of those already.

Far as hoses go we've got most if not all already. If memory serves we lack 2 or 3 "special" ones. But the broken motor had nearly new hoses, gaskets etc.
That car had already been restored by somebody. I found certain items while fixing it up that were not original including the rear bumper, much of the interior, and the previous rust repairs have shown back up. (Typical). Oh and the car was re-sprayed with an Si States only color.

Kool, if you find you are missing one, the offer still stands.

I found that a few of the hoses that their system called out weren't the right ones, so I substituted some that had the right lengths and bends. I have friends at a couple of the AZ's by me and I went in the back with my stock hoses and matched them up with theirs. Some were a direct fit and others might have been longer or had an extra bend on the end, so I just cut them to fit. Was able to use the remaining piece for another hose and if not, then I put it in my ziploc bag of "extras" for later.
