Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

I am dead set on replacing my stock Fog lights with some aftermarket 4" x 6" Headlights with Halo LED lights. The main reason is so I can have Headlights and DRL (Daytime Running Lights) without having to open the Pop-Ups.

The dilemma is... Do I go for the Color Shift ones that I can select any color of your generic rainbow, or do I go with the plain White Halo with an Ultra-bright white H4 (I think) Hi/Lo Bulb.

I plan to do the Mod where my DRL's will be on when I turn on my parking lights, the Lo beams will be on when I turn on the Fog light switch, and the Hi beams will turn on when I have the Pop-Ups up, those low Beams on, AND the Hi beams on.

I guess my question is...

Is it "Too fancy" to have the option of Multi-colored LED Halo's on your car. This setup comes with a remote so you can select the color you want the Halo's to display.

Thank you all for your serious and humorous suggestions!

Re: Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

Just curious Tony, but why don't you just do the fog light rewire that allows you to turn them on without having to turn on the headlights? This...Fog Light Re-Wire

As far as changing them out for aftermarket lights, I'm kind of partial to the stock look and color. Not really into flashy colored lights on cars (especially if they're behind me and I've been driving fast ). And halo's look kind of cheap and ricey to me. But it's your car, what color do you want to go with?

You might also check your local laws about headlight placement. If your state is like mine, there are rules about how high and how low you can place lights used for the purpose of headlights.

Thanks for your suggestions Mike. Yea, Either way I go, I am going to do the Fog Light Rewire so I can turn them on with my parking lights instead of my headlights. I would wire the main bulb to the Fog Light Switch and the Halo to my ignition.

The set of lights I saw has multi-colored LEDS in each lens so you can change the color as you desire... So it's kind of a novelty as opposed to functionality.

This is what they look like:

4x6" Colorshift RGB SMD LED Halo Angel Eye Headlight 60W Halogen Light Bulb Pair | eBay

After thinking about it... Maybe the multi-colored Halos are too "cheesy" and I should just stick with the white Halo, if I go with Aftermarket.

I like the stock look as well but my driver side Fog light is missing about a 1/4 of the lens. Too many big trucks and debris on my route to work is to blame. Guess I could post a WANT Ad on here to see if anyone has one for sale. Just don't want to buy one and then not use it.

As far as legality, I would still use my regular pop-ups as needed. The Fog/Headlights are for increased visibility for other drivers to see me.

Seems to me they'll be a little big. Will they fit in your bumper? They're replacement "bulbs" for stock sealed beam headlights. How are you planning to mount them? I'm imagining a rally car look with those.

I mentioned the legality because these are actual headlighs, not just fog or driving lights. Mounting headlights that low on the bumper could cause you legal issues. If you do the fog light rewire you can just use the fogs as the DRL's. I have spare 88/89 fog lights if you need one.

While you're at it, you should do a "lazy eye" mod on the pop-ups. I saw it once on a C5 corvette, but i have never seen it on a prelude.

Mhmmmmmmmm a foglight post, I hope you don't mind if I jack the post for a second tonemeister69.
Does my 88 2.0 base prelude have the connectors for the fog lights? It does have the connector for the fog light switch but I thought I'd ask before I pull the foglight caps off.

Re: Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

It most likely only has one connector for the fog lights, forget which side though. I've seen several that were like that, including the 89 S models I used to own. I added fogs by splicing another fog light connector into the wiring for the one existing connector there. You'll also need a fog light relay. It goes in the relay strip located behind the driver's side kick panel.

Nah, I don't mind... If you do, have one or two fog light connectors, it will most likely be zip tied to the frame or a bracket behind the bumper. You should be able to tell by determining which wire is ground and then use a multimeter to see if the wire in the instrument cluster connects to that connector.

Re: Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

So, for the time being, since Luzer had a "spare" driver side fog light lens, (Thanks Man!) I am going to go with the stock fog lights and do the Fog Light Re-Wire so I can use them as DRL's.

I definitely decided against the Multi-Colored Halo's, even though they seem like a novel thing to have. If I change my mind down the road, I'll probably get the white Halos with white main bulbs. Not a fan of the "blue" headlights.

I will have to clean and want to polish both lenses so they are like new. Will probably polish my headlights as well, or possibly fork over the money for new Halogens. I'll keep these as backup cause I have this "curse"... EVERYTIME I put new headlights in, at least one, and sometimes both get broken with rocks or road debris. I have a plan to remedy this from happening, but I have to find a cheaper solution than a pair of Ronald Reagan Era Mini-"Star Wars" Satellite laser beam mounted to my bumper to blast any rocks before they hit my headlights. (Seriously, my secret plan involves some high dollar stuff but I am sure that there is an affordable solution out there that is just as good).

I'll fill you guys in once I have figured it out.

Friggin' college man, taking over everything. I get so much work in my english class alone that it's negatively impacting my other classes

Wig-wags are still working nicely. I haven't gotten to go back in and do the 2-relay-per-side circuit, though.

I got big plans for summer! Recently i've been on that Plasti-Dip craze. Gonna dip my wheels this custom gold i made. Again, it's about finding time to do it. Edit: I also dipped my front emblem the same color :)
Also on my summer list is a battery relocation, wire tuck, and cruise control delete. I might relocate my fusebox and upgrade my grounds while i'm at it. Then i bought new spark plugs today (ngk iridium ix). I'm not gonna install them yet, though. Gonna give my engine a nice seafoam treatment, then change out my oil and plugs.

Aaaaaaaaand then there's the 5 speed swap i need to save up and start sourcing parts for.
Big plans for the Lude this summer, and i'm excited for it. :)

I remember when plasti-dip was actually something you dipped a part into.

I plasti-dipped my wheels black last year. They looked pretty good, but it wasn't as easy to peel off the tires as the you tube videos show.

Why are you deleting the cruise control? I mean, it's your car so do what you want. I'm just trying to figure out the advantage of doing that. It won't save hardly any weight, and it's nice to have on longer drives.

Tony, you know I'll be expecting a pic after you polish everything up!

I never use it. Makes me lazy on the freeways. Without it i'm more attentive to the road around me. I also have no CC button on my dash because i replaced it with my fog light switch.

Really, though, it's for looks. Part of my effort to have a cleaned up engine bay. It's also right up against the firewall in 5th gens, which is crowded enough. :)

Fair enough.

Freeways in general make me a lazy driver. Without cruise I would probably have too many speeding tickets.

You know it! Probably won't be until a few weekends from now... I won't have time to tinker due to too many events these next couple weekends. I still need to take pics of my new exhaust too!

Re: Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

Ok, I got the Replacement Stock Fog Light in this weekend, thanks to the help of Luzer (Thank's for coming through Man!) I am glad that I didn't go aftermarket...

Look, I know you guys have seen 100's of 3rd gens with the fog lights on, but I am going to post a pic of my car anyways!

^^ agree..the style of the 88/89 is a bit more agressive looking than the 90/91 facelift imo.
We bought a nice bumper off a junkyard 89 to swap to the '91 someday.

I pulled fog lights from a 91 in the junkyard one time. I had to remove the bumper cover to remove the whole thing. Not sure why Honda designed them that way when the 88/89 was easily removed with one bolt, no bumper removal necessary.

THAT would REALLY suck... I feel for you B20... Not to rub it in but I'm glad I have an '89...

Thanks! There's a few scuffs on the bumper that I need to give some TLC but I got the lights all cleaned up.

Re: Wanting to Replace My Fog Lights w/ Aftermarket Halo Headlights

Ok, I got the chance to MOD my Fog lights to come on without having to turn on the Pop-Ups! I decided to NOT cut the Red/White wires as was described in the How-To.

Instead, I used a dental pick to push up the retainer clip and pull that Red/White wire out of the Relay assembly from the back.

You can see the retainer clip hanging down in the top left opening (Its a light blue upside down triangle):

I then put some heat shrink on the Red/White wire to keep it from "Arc & Spark".

I then got a female spade terminal and soldered a wire to it and ran that to the relay socket and clicked it in from the back:

You can see that it is silver in the top left socket:

I then ran the other end to my aftermarket radio harness that has an illumination wire and splice it into the connector of that.

(This is a pic of me testing it out before doing the final connection. I installed a "new" radio so I had to change the harness out, so I cut all those crimps off and soldered ALL those connections and put heat shrink on all of them)

And here is the final result:

In short, I was able to do the Mod without cutting or splicing into any of the stock wires.

Aside from swapping out the Radio Harness, it took me maybe an hour tops to perform this Mod, including getting out my tools and cleaning up afterwards.

That's a nice adjustment to the write-up. Looks good.

Thanks! I probably should add this to the How-To thread on here.

Not like I ever plan to sell my car, but it's nice to keep the stock wiring intact just in case I want to go back stock.

5 YEARS and you STILL haven't figured it out??!!

Just Playing...

Are they standard fog lights? Is it the bulb that is exploding or do you have the HID's with a ballast and THAT is exploding?

I'm back after much needed motivation I worked on the Prelude today. Is THIS the fog plug that has been all the talk? Passenger side btw.
