1988 lude spoiler options?

My 1988 yellow prelude Si didn't come with a spoiler and i kind of want one it adds style IMO. Should I just go stock(if i can find one or maybe another oem Honda/acura spoiler?) Anyone know of any acura/Honda spoilers that would fit? I saw a 2004 acura TL spoiler on craigslist near me.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

Can't speak for other spoilers fitting other than the 2nd gen will not.

Your best bet is a junkyard. Right many 3g cars are showing up at them these days. Grab as much wire from the spoiler mounted third brake lamp as you can.

Now, when you find one, grab the trunk lid as well. In case you change your mind later you'll still have your old, undrilled trunk lid. Also grab the deck lid from the back window in case you decide to eliminate the window mounted 3rd brake lamp. But be careful removing it, those things are very fragile.

I know several folks searching for an undrilled trunk lid after deciding they no longer dig on the spoiler.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

One thing to note is... If your car has a power antenna and did NOT come stock with a spoiler and you add one...

BEWARE!!!

when closing your trunklid as you WILL bend your antenna... Because there is a clearance issue and cars that are stock WITH spoilers and power antennas have a switch/relay that lowers the antenna when you pop the trunk.

I know because I added a spoiler and bent my antenna mast cause I wasn't paying attention.

But I soon will be working on making a "plug n play" harness in lieu of having to replace the control box that lowers the antenna automatically. I'll post the "How-To" on here when I am done. I also could make one for those who would just like to buy one.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

Oh man I forgot all about the brake light in the window...yeah I'll probably just keep it w.o a spoiler then unless I find a trunk lid and besides I don't wanna break my antenna. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

Wasn't trying to scare you... Just wanted you to be aware of what all needs to be addressed when adding the spoiler.

I took my 3rd tail light out (Mostly because the housing was broken) and I haven't gotten around to removing the metal brackets that it fastened to. (Looks kinda tacky) I also have to decide on how to cover the hole. Not really wanting to replace the whole back dash (package tray) just to cover the hole.

The OTHER thing I forgot to mention is that the spoiler is LED and the 3rd tail light is incandescent (standard bulb) and because of this, unless you run both, the 3rd tail light AND the spoiler light, you will get the "Tail light out" error on your dash cluster...

OR...

You can fix it by swapping out the electronic box for the one for a car with a spoiler (Which I think also has the "auto-power-antenna-lowering" circuit in it as well)

OR...

You could just wire a incandescent bulb in parallel with the LED spoiler inside your trunk as I did! I just used the socket and bulb from the 3rd tail light I took out.

Yeah, you thought it was just going to be as easy as installing a spoiler huh?

And THAT is what I thought as well...

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

^^ and that's why the undrilled trunk lid is so popular.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

When I owned my first 3rd gen (89 S model) I wanted a spoiler. I found someone who lived a couple hundred miles away who didn't want his spoiler. So we met half way and traded trunk lids. The best part was that we both had gold colored 89's.

I wish I could find a clean undrilled trunk lid for mine. Now I prefer the look without the wing. It seems like any that I have found were either dented or have rust. I've been considering just plugging the holes and repainting, but I'd rather have one of each so that I can swap them to suit my mood LOL.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

I'll stick w the no spoiler. Just get the trunk lid repainted. Previous owner sprayed black paint over a rust spot starting.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

The no spoiler I can handle but these amber tail lights are ugly ....barrable for now... seeing my car is yellow. Th rear end may need to be changed to 90-91 someday and I've read that isn't as fun of a swap either.

Re: 1988 lude spoiler options?

Take a close look at my sig picture. You'll see my 89 has 90/91 tail lights. I did the swap a few summers ago, and it was a lot of work. But I'm very glad I did it now. Amber looks terrible on a red car LOL.

They are beautiful. On an 88-89 though. You just need to clean up your lude and get it lowered with the right rims possible lip kit(ah hem ah ahem....mine)

Each version has its qualities. I love both rear ends and their tail lights.
