Windshield wipers dont work

So my windshield wipers dont work. I haven't gotten under the dash and pulled my fuse, but I also wonder if something in the linkage broke. I turned the wipers on the slowest setting, and got a loud grinding noise. Does that mean that mean the motor works still? Maybe something is wrapped up in the linkage?

Re: Windshield wipers dont work

Do the wipers move in accompaniment to the loud grinding noise? The motor may not be completely dead, but may not be putting out enough power to turn the output shaft, or the internal gearing may be toast. Or could be something in the linkage -- you'll have to pull the cowling off and look.

No the wipers don't move. I can move them myself manually on the windshield, but they stopped working after I replaced my main relay, and I've heard that that is a common problem.

Wait, what? What are you saying that you heard is a common problem? The main relay is commonly the cause of an engine not starting (common problem). But it's not common for the wipers to not work after changing the main relay, if that's what you're implying. At least not that I've ever heard of. The main relay controls the fuel pump, and has nothing to do with the wipers.

I'm assuming you were having problems with the engine starting, so you replaced the main relay to fix that?

Check your grounds for build up.

Sounds silly here. But grounds on these cars were less than perfect when new.
A sketchy ground can cause all kinds of weird stuff.

One time my window was doing weird stuff. I cleaned all ground points. My window worked proper and my hard to start issue disappeared as well.

Re: Windshield wipers dont work

A few forums had said replacing the main relay could blow some fuses. Yes I have replaced the main relay as well as my fuel pump. Simply soldering the points wasn't enough. But i did get it figured out. After replacing the wiper bushings, they still didn't work. Just popped right back off cuz they were too stripped. Turns out the linkage was completely backwards from someone else previously working on it, before I bought it...
