ANNNNDDDD BREATHE!!! I read that in my head and ran out of breath...

But seriously, Congratulations on becoming a new 3G owner...

If you Wiki Honda Prelude Engines, it will list all of them by model and years made. It shows their horsepower and torque specs and I believe weights as well. Then you can look online for places that sell each engine and then decide which one you want to go with based on performance, cost, and ease of the engine swap.

There are plenty of threads on this site discussing advantages/disadvantages of each setup, methods on performing them, and links to finding the necessary parts and tools.

RESEARCH is the VERY FIRST STEP in performing any MODS to your car... Obtaining the money is the second.

Congrats on your new lude! You're gonna love owning it. My first 3rd gen was an S model, and I still miss that car.

Now the bad news...the S model is the most difficult to do the h22 swap on. You will not only be swapping in the engine and transmission (along with all that is involved with the h22 swap), but you'll also need to convert the car to fuel injection. This involves swapping pretty much the entire wiring harness in the car, the fuel tank, and running a return fuel line to the fuel tank. You'll also need to swap the fuel tank with one from a fuel injected 3rd gen. I don't want to discourage you from doing it, but I want you to be aware of what you're getting yourself into. The last thing I want to see is another project lude that never gets finished because the owner didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Please do your research on this before you buy anything for this swap. It's a lot of work.

Re: Im new here and i need help

thanks for the help and advice everyone and discouraged nahh. it actually makes me want to do it even more now. i love a challenge and its not as bad as it sounds. It just requires a little more tlc. when it comes to doing a swap like the h22 and someone dedicated to doing what they set out to do. And ima go ahead and say i might ask questions that are already somewhere in the threads but im new here and just looking for real help. my love for these preludes is real i just dont know everything so any information will help out alot in my build sadly ive yet to get it home it is about 2/3 hours away at my buddies moms house i gotta get tires and an truck and trailer it home but i will post up some pics once i get it home.

Re: Im new here and i need help

Unfortunately the 3g requires a lot of research for what you seek. Restoring one is hard enough due to many of the parts being depleted. But to turn one into a fire breathing hot rod is even more difficult. Even in it's hey-day the aftermarket items were limited. And now you're 15-20 years after it's peak in popularity.
Those words were not meant to discourage, but to motivate.

My first suggestion is hire a tow truck. Maybe $300+, but cheaper than a couple tanks of gas and a set of tires that'll sit for who knows how long.. Get it home! Buy a $35 cover to keep the local gov't the junk car nazis off your case.

Sounds like you have time. Sounds like you don't have cash.
Time can be spent scouring places like here, prelude3g, prelude online, honda-tech, cb tuner, honda hook up, super honda and prelude power for the information you lack. Then establish a budget figuring at least $5 grand over time.

If you don't have access to or own tools add another $1000...
When you get it home buy some car care products and spit shine that baby.

In time, if you don't have a garage but do have a level, solid spot, consider purchasing one of those canvas huts. Then your car will be protected from the elements and your work will not be limited to fair weather days only.

And figure at least a year before she's on the road. Unless you have help, working on it by yourself takes longer.

How many years are you into yours now Mike?
I surrendered after 1. I gave mine to my son who put the good one in mothballs, found a new home for the decent one and the parts barn is covered with snow as I type this. We'll get back to that one someday....

Re: Im new here and i need help

You have the right attitude. How are your finances? This will not be cheap to do. Also, it will require many trips to the junkyard for the carb to FI swap. You'd probably be better off finding a fuel injected 3rd gen parts car for the donor parts if you have the room to keep it. It could be cheaper in the long run.

^^ way less expensive than going through car-part.com.

Re: Im new here and i need help

car-part.com is actually my last resort. My local junkyard prices are a fraction of the prices I've seen on that site. My only issue with going to the junkers is that it's an hour drive one-way. Not as much of an issue with the current low gas prices, but how long can that last?

I haven't had to resort to it yet either. But it is a viable alternative for those who either live in ludeless areas or just flat out cannot find the part anywhere else.

Exactly. Like I said...last resort.

At least there are still options for us.

Re: Im new here and i need help

yes there is options (few) and i know exactly how hard it is to find part as i own another project car its a 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442... parts are hard to find but saying that there are now companies that are slowly picking up and reproducing part for my 442. but nothing can discourage me from building either car because the things people say only encourage me. Money eh not much of none and im not just talking about trying to do this in all one bunch but i wanna get everything inside my head for the future ahead. My 442 is on the side right now the lude will be first as its it 100% better shape. Also im just going to get it driving for the most part and drive it with the sohc b20 for a while till i have the money to start buying parts.. and there is a yellow 3rd gen that runs around my neighborhood its a si and it looks rough ima stop and ask the guy if he'd sell it but i'd just like to thank yall for the help.

Right on.

Keep your eyes on local facebook clubs, craigslist or auto trader sites for shells or crashed cars too.

Now that we have all that out of the way it's time for the important stuff. We're all pic whores here, so please post pics of your lude. It's kind of customary to include pics when you post up that you picked up a new lude.

It's different building a import to a muscle car like my 442. but my love sticks with honda..... once again thanks to ya'll for helping me.

Re: Im new here and i need help

Lol...there are numerous big iron junkies here sharing the stoke of Mr. Hondas prelude.
It all began at a time when the old crowd here thumbed their nose at all things jap...unless we needed to get from point a to point x and back on $5 worth of gas.
All the while noticing these cars are pretty fun zipping down back roads, we also noted they wouldn't pull a wet string out of a cats butt compared to those full on big engines.

My son brought home a 91 for his first car and I was hooked. I tried talking him into a mustang. Glad he didn't listen.

Hope you and yours are better soon...'cause we wanna see some pix!

Good to know that I'm not the ONLY "BOP" guy who also has a Prelude! And I feel your pain on finding parts for that 442... It's just as hard to find them for a GSX... And even harder for something in good condition NOT costing an arm and/or a leg!

Re: Im new here and i need help

I dug my black on black 77 cutlass brougham with 4 bolt 350, shift kit, high rise intake, holley 850, comp cams, headers hooked to nice alluminized factory quiet exhaust etc..she had eagle 235's on all 4 corners, gas shocks, poly bushings, beefy springs up front, rear sway bar for fun on the back roads while staying between the ditches and chrome....all over the place.

Sumbeech would pass everything but a gas station. Gas went to $1.50, I had young kids and a house note. Car had to go. So the next car was a hot rod 84 t-bird with a big ole v6 for decent mpg and 195 tires for a little slip n slide fun on the back roads...
There were others here n there. But the Preludes are probably what I'll still have later in life...simply because I'm accumulating enough spare parts to make it last at least 20 more years barring anything like a wipeout occuring. By then I'll be zipping around on a battery powered wheel chair (probably with Honda logo stickers plastered all over it, because I'm hoarding those too)

Okay, pardon my ignorance...what is a "BOP" guy? I'm not sure you'll want to claim that you are one if you look at how the urban dictionary defines "BOP".

Buick, Olds. and Pontiac. The automatic trans bell housing pattern will only fit those NOT Chevy. It also fits cadillac but for some reason nobody mentions that.

yes but i love my honda's but my love stands with any car someone took there sweat blood and tears to build. Its respect for the build and like me i love a challenge because harder the task the more people walk away, but i go in ready with my battle axe and take the challenge head on... but i own a few pontiac's myself a 1989 Bonniville and a 1985 sunbird sedan ... my dad gave me my bonniville and i actually picked up the sunbird from an old lady for $200.. but every build has a story.

^^ well if you don't mind, please share sources, tips, ideas and other items as you progress.

Maybe in a fashion where searches by others trying to resurect the 3g carby lude would result in your information being showcased. Title to the thread would be key.

Excellent point. It's hard not to love a car that someone spent the majority of their free time for months to years (and possibly a small fortune) sweating and swearing over, to get it close to some mental picture they had in their mind when they started.

Thanks Les! I was a Chevy guy, which might explain why I didn't know that. I've owned one Pontiac in my life (of more than 40 cars I've owned), and that was actually a Holden Monaro (2004 GTO). It had an LS1 in it LOL.

JEEZ! I turn my back for a minute and they ALL come out of the woodwork! LOL! Too many posts to quote...

Nice Car Les!

I am unable to look up BOP on Urban Dictionary as my work has decided that it is "Inappropriate Material" and has blocked it. I'll look it up when I get home.

Yeah, I wish Buick parts were as available AND inexpensive as as Chevy parts... But there are some advantages that make that worth-while.

And here's a couple PICs of my WIP:

Re: Im new here and i need help

Very nice Les!! I used to have a shop just like yours. I still have pictures of my GTO, but I wish I still had the car. I still don't know why I sold it. It only had 29K miles on the odometer. I guess I thought I needed a pick-up more than that car. And now I don't even have that pick-up anymore LOL. It was before I realized that I can afford more than one car besides the lude I guess. Who knew?

Love the Holden! Also Love the 77-83 Malibu in the background... And with a spolier? NICE! I had a 4 door that was the same color as those glow in the dark toys you get in cereal boxes. Mine had a tiny 267 CUIN V8! Technically was my first car.
