Have a chance to buy a 1989 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si
Yellow exterior, black cloth interior
5 speed manual transmission
Car has very low milage, was driven few miles every year but has been sitting for last year and a half
Kelly blue book has no value what do you guys think would be a good fair price

Re: Value of 89 SI

The better the condition, the more money, Like showroom condition command 3-5 g's,and Mad max beyond Thunder dome... like 800.00.

having said that, hear it running, bring a car guy and eyeball the car for yourself. Bring 2800.00 to negotiate terms. Most people want to get rid of the car, so let the owner speak first.

^^ this

Low miles, as in less than 100k? Or like 145?
From a collector stand point if the far left odometer number is still zero, that's a huge bonus.

Low miles would be like, say 36,000 or say 19000.

Is it carbureted? If you guys have emissions, Check the Carfax. Everytime we get tested, The mileage goes to the state. Kind of hard here to get a low mileage speedometer out of the j-yard when the state knows what it really is.

Re: Value of 89 SI

I bought my "low mileage" car (70,000) this past March from a little old lady who really took care of it. It had sat for a year or two and built up sludge in the oil pan. The oil looked fine on the dip stick cause the nasty was down in the bottom. When it got churned up with the good oil, it cause a valve to stick, and then get broken off and I had to replace the head, and a piston.

So my advice is to not drive it home... have it towed to your house and pull the pan and clean it out BEFORE you start driving it. It won't take that long to do and it'll only cost you the price of an oil pan gasket and a tube of sealant.
