rounded off bolt

Anyone besides me ever round off the tensioner bolt for the power steering pump removal. It's a bitch just to get to it. So I removed the pulley then got the two bolts out for the pump.Put the bottom bolt in nice and snug then put the pulley and belt on. The used a prybar to swing it up to the top bolt. Guess that's the only fix for now.

Re: rounded off bolt

Which car Les?

Haven't rounded one off (yet) but sounds like a drag.
On my 5th gen the tensioner bolt was broken off when I bought the car. That snug thing you speak of has held for a couple of years now.

I just replaced the (5th gen) bolt from hondapartsnow while they still have them. I've read here (if memory is correct) the 90/91 bolt was a special type and honda warehouses are outta stock.
There was a discussion about one of the pulley tensioner bolts being hard to find anyway.

Re: rounded off bolt

It's a 14mm bolt and you have about a half an inch just to get the wrench on.

Re: rounded off bolt

Yeah I lifted the hood of the 91 and spent a couple minutes trying to find the darn thing. I was like "heavens to merg-a-troid, where is it?"

Honda did good on the 5th gen. The bolt is cheesy and fragile. But at least it's easy to fix if something goes wrong.

So was it 1 flat or 2?

Re: rounded off bolt

It was 1 flat.Maybe later I'll see if I can replace the whole tensioner assembly.I'm sure it just bolts to the block or something.

Re: rounded off bolt

Wait, which bolt? Are you talking about the nut that you loosen before adjusting the tensioner bolt, or the tensioner bolt itself? Here's a link, tell us which number you are talking about...

1991 Honda Prelude 2 Door 2.05SI (4WS) KA 5MT P.S. Pump - Speed Sensor

If you're talking about the idler pulley nut (#18 in that link), it's much easier to work on if you remove the cruise control servo first. I use a Gearwrench ratcheting end wrench to get to it though. It's a little longer than my Craftsman 14mm end wrench, which makes it a little easier to get to that nut.

They are still available from Honda.

If you're actually talking about the tensioner bolt (#24 in that link), it's easier to access that bolt through the headlight opening using a socket and either a long extension or several extensions connected together. I use an 18 inch extionsion. You have to open up the headlight in order to be able to use that method.

I have spares of all these parts if you need a replacement. Just send me an IM and we'll talk about getting one to you.

Re: rounded off bolt

It's number 18. I have a long 14 mm wrench that works great on my other Lude but for some reason , This thing felt like it was welded. It was way too tight.
