OFF ILDLE STUMBLE AND SURGING

Just got a 1990 ALB 2.1 automatic. At a stop in drive, You give it gas to go and there's a slight hesitation or stumble. Any help? Second, When you're in cruise at any speed, It feels like it's surging or pulling. Almost like points are closing up like on the older cars. Did a search but couldn't find much. Anyone have these symptoms? Thought about plugging up the egr vacuum hose for starters.

Re: OFF ILDLE STUMBLE AND SURGING

I had a one time issue like you describe. And I adjusted the throttle cable tighter. After that I had idle bounce. I returned the slack to the cable minus about a quarter turn. Idle bounce was gone and the bogging never returned.

I had the distinct feeling it was transmission related in that it would be kinda stuck in a higher gear than it shoulda been...like 3rd when it should have been in second. Or stuck in second when sitting still and not shifting to first when you take off. The tranny stays in second when you are stopped. When you press the accelerator is shifts into first.

My issue went away and never returned.

Unfortunately there is not a lot written (that I could find anyway) about the 3g auto tranny and it's perils. It was very reliable, and wasn't popular with enthusiasts in the US.

I have an article bookmarked somewhere discussing those trannies by a propellerhead guy. You can go to wiki and look up 'honda prelude', scroll down to the 3rd gen part and it's a link that discusses the wonderous Honda auto tranny for that model car. Good read, but a lot of digital speek to us anolog people.

Edit:
Checked the wiki article and they shortened it. Quite a bit. Including the removal of the link to the article speaking of Honda's 4 speed automatic using planetary gears instead of a torque convertor. ...and of course I have not been able to find my book mark to the article.
In the 3g service manual one of the corrections to shifting mentions throttle cable adjustment being proper tension.

Re: OFF ILDLE STUMBLE AND SURGING

Now you ARE talking about the throttle cable and NOT the transmission cable, Right?

Re: OFF ILDLE STUMBLE AND SURGING

Correct.

If you don't have one, go to the site prelude3g and get their version of the pdf service manual..with 89/90 suppliments. Read the auto tranny section...
It's something to do with the lock up of the gizmo that aint a torque convertor but acts like one..I just forget what it's called.

It may not be tranny related Les. I'm just throwing out something to check besides the usual cap/rotor/egr stuff.
