89 Prelude 2.0si Idle surging issue

Firstly just wanted to say hello and thanks, I have used this forum many times for answers and have never had to create an account or make a post.

I have a 1989 2.0si with an idle that surges from 1200 to 1600 rpm in park and neutral, in driving gears it is a little high at 1000. Within the last 20k miles I've replaced the head, head gasket kit, water pump, timing belt, all fluids, throttle body gasket, cleaned the throttle body, cleaned the iac valve twice according to a writeup I found on this forum, replaced all of the vacuum lines, and have done much more I assume would be unrelated to this issue.

I noticed when I unplug the iac valve the idle goes to normal and the check engine light comes on(I assume because the IAC valve was unplugged). Considering I have cleaned the IAC valve twice I think it is safe to say it probably needs replaced but I was hoping I could get some confirmation or more ideas of what I might should try from those more knowledgeable than myself.

I've done the same. Cleaning out the iac valve sometimes does not fix the problem.Once I replaced the iac with a new one, Everything was perfect. 20 Years is a long time for any component. Before you decide to replace it with another(new or used) See if you can borrow one from a friend that has a known good working one if possible. Tighten the intake manifold just to make yourself feel better cause I had very high rpm's when I didn't tighten it all the way.

Did you have the idle surge issue before you did the head work? If not, it's possible that you didn't get the gasket surfaces for the intake manifold gasket completely clean, leading to a slight vacuum leak. If you had the problem before then disregard. Just thought I'd mention it since you didn't really say if it was pre-existing before you replaced the head.

Tonight after work I will pull off the intake manifold and make sure I get the surface cleaned before remounting it and torquing it to specification. I didn't have the problem before replacing the head, if it makes any difference all of the work done was prompted because it shredded the timing belt going down the freeway.

Thank you both for the suggestions.

Re: 89 Prelude 2.0si Idle surging issue

I just read today that if you don't bleed the coolant system via the valve on the thermostat housing that you can have surge issues as well cause the car "thinks" that the temperature is fluctuating, so it is trying to compensate that fluctuation.

You should easily be able to find the procedure on "How To Properly Bleed The Coolant System"

Re: 89 Prelude 2.0si Idle surging issue

Does it 'bounce'? As is 1000/1600/1000/1600 up/down/up/down...or just do it's thing whenever it feels like it?

I had a bogging issue I thought may be the throtle cable. Tightened it some, got idle bounce, put back the slack, no more idle bounce.

And have you checked your compression in the pistons?
