GENIII vibration on downshift

Hi guy's

My son has a 89, series III prelude, 4ws that has developed a vibration all of a sudden, now this vibration really only comes in as you slow down in gear speed, the vehicle shutters as you take off, and shutters in reverese.

Any ideas guy's please?

Re: GENIII vibration on downshift

Assuming this is a 5 speed we're talking about.. my 5 speed prelude never did this but i had a 5 speed accord that did this for a little while right before my clutch started to slip...had some hot spots on my flywheel and eventually my clutch started to go and developed a little clutch chatter...could possibly be an issue with the clutch pressure plate as well. Of course if you find that it's any one of those your going to have the trans out and should get all new parts unless you are able to have the flywheel resurfaced..If it's an automatic I wouldn't be surprised if you were still possibly looking at transmission issues.

Re: GENIII vibration on downshift

Either time to turn the flywheel or time to replace the motor and trans mounts.

Turn the flywheel?
we had a mechanic tell us it's the gearbox but i'm not convinced as the actual box seems to work fine.

Re: GENIII vibration on downshift

A manual trans is not likely to do that. Could be motor/trans mounts, but sounds more like a clutch issue to me. It's easy enough to check the motor mounts though. Set the parking brake. Open the hood and have someone try to go forward and reverse (while you watch the engine), but not enough to kill the engine or move the car. Watch to see how much the engine moves while doing this. It should move very little.

It's a little more (okay, a lot more) involved to check the clutch/flywheel. You will need to separate the engine/trans to inspect things. But you can take off the dust cover on the bottom and look to see if you're getting any fluid up into the clutch assembly.

Re: GENIII vibration on downshift

Isn't it nice when problems are that simple to fix?
