Weird scraping noise

Hey guys, I own a 1991 auto and has been giving me headaches for around a year now. The newest problem happened today. I drove home from work (20 min drive) and about 50 meters before I got to my house this scraping noise started happening.

I pulled over because it sounded like I was driving on my rims. No flat tires and nothing on the bottom of the car scraping on the ground etc. Thought I would drive it the rest of the 50 meters home. Scraping kept happening regardless of whether my foot was on/off the accelerator or on/off the brake, just when ever the car was moving.

I turned my car off and turned the key to the on position and the fan underneath the car turned on, blowing hot air out from under the car. The temp gauge on the dashboard was normal (in the middle between H and C). This fan has only come on 2 times in the 1 year period that I have owned the car.

I checked all the oil water levels etc and they were good. Waited 6 hours for the engine to cool and drove it and the sound went away.

Does anyone know what could cause that sound? Could some part of the car getting too hot cause a scraping? (Even though it is winter where I live) Would really appreciate input as I am no mechanic and am now too scared to drive it in case it spontaneously combusts.

Thank you very much.

Re: Weird scraping noise

Sounds like a similar problem I had, which turned out to be the ac compressor pulley scraping when it turned on and it would happen at random times and then just go away and I wouldn't hear it again for like a month(keep in mind I don't have A/C but everything is still connected except for the ac condenser fan which didn't work) I just sprayed the pulley with WD40(I know I know haha) and it went away and I haven't heard it since then.

Re: Weird scraping noise

^^ This. Does the sound only happen when you are moving? Does it change when the speed of the car changes? Does it change with engine rpm's? Does it sound like it's coming from the front of the car or the rear?

Your car isn't going to spontaneously combust, lol. Chances are that you will need to drive it to troubleshoot the problem. Have someone outside the car as you drive by them and see if they can tell where the sound is coming from (if it only happens when you are moving).

Scraping noises aren't normal (obviously), nor are they common problems for 3rd gens that we can say what the problem might be with any kind of certainty. You're going to be the best person to troubleshoot this unless you can find someone local to you to help. A video would definitely help, but even then we still might not be able to help you.

Re: Weird scraping noise

Sorry for the lack of info but the sound stopped after I let the car cool down. Thanks for the replies, I'll keep an ear out to see if it happens again. Just wanted to know if anyone had a similar problem or if it was serious. I love my 3rd gen but it seems it is on its way out

Re: Weird scraping noise

I had a problem like that and found out that when removing the c.v joint out of the hub, There's a plastic seal to keep water out and I put it in backwards. Squealed like a bastard. It fit and ran perfect though.

Re: Weird scraping noise

It's mostly a rock got stuck in between your rotor and splash guard or your belts need tightening up. Still don't know if it does it at idle or not.

You're probably right about that. Happens to my WRX all the time in the winter. They don't use salt around here but instead use gravel. My 2013 WRX is riddled with rock chips because of it, and there is almost a constant squeal from small pieces getting stuck between my rotors and dust shields. I complained to the state and they told me they classify it as "sand" not gravel. I'd hate to see what they classify as "Gravel" then. I loathe winter driving around here.

I guess the OP decided that he didn't need to respond anymore since the noise went away LOL.
