Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

Ok. I started the car, let it run at idle until completely warm. The idle went to about 1450rpm and held. Idle adjustment screw is all the way in. It took the same effort to get it to idle on its own. I shut off the car and loosened the fuel line output on the fuel filter. No pressure!! Either the fuel pressure regulator is screwed or the pump is screwed.

I'm trying to record all my actions in this thread until it runs as it should. That way I don't forget and it may be helpful to someone in the future.

If anyone wants to chime in while I'm doing this, PLEASE DO SO!!

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

Ok. I finally got a proper reading for the TPS.
.48v closed
4.12v at WOT

I read that it needs to be .5v closed and 4.5 WOT. The difference closed is much smaller than the difference at WOT. Is this something to be worried about?

Edit: adjusted throttle cable til TPS read .50v closed only went to 4.17v WOT.

Could .33v difference at WOT cause my bogging?

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

Well, I took a much needed break and drove to a friends house, in the F150, used his computer to download all the manuals in the resource thread. Printing out now. Looking at the trouble shooting flowchart that Luzer suggested, I'll be following that in the AM. Hopefully I'm finished before the start of the Daytona 500!

Good luck with your troubleshooting. And I have three letters for you about Daytona...DVR.

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

I haven't watched racing in a few years... I don't watch tv anymore.

I keep an am radio handy just for races tho. Reminds me of when I was a kid and there was no racing on tv.
First Daytona I saw came on cbs... in progress... as in like half way over before they switched from like, ice skating to stock car racing.
Ahhhhhh....the good ole days.

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

Following the flowcharts, it seems the yellow/green wire, which according to the wiring diagram is common between both the ECU and TCU, has a short or an open. Either way it needs repair. Hard to beleive that this is causing my driveability issue.

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

I have never repaired a a wire harness before. What is the best way to do so?

I'll admit, that wire being bad and affecting the Coolant temp sensor, TCU and ECU all makes sense. Thanks to Prelude13, Luzer, Bykfixer, I may get this thing going pretty soon. I have been fond of these cars, namely the 3g, since I was a kid. I love the styling of them. Glad I bought it and have learned what I have so far. Thanks again guys!

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

I've never repaired a harness per say. Just rusty junction points in an ole Dodge truck. Where for example three hot wires on one side and two on the other. I cut out the rusty connector and solderless connected the three to two and eliminated the intersector.

Some say solder is best. Others swear by the solderless connectors.
I used crimp connectors simply because I had never soldered.

Btw, you deserve most of the credit for tackling this stuff on your own.

Edit:
Guess you've been busy during the rain delay?
I listened on my phone briefly.... then the rain came.

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

Okay, first things first...I hate rain delays lol

I have many years experience working with wiring. To repair wiring you would want to strip about a half inch from both ends to be connected, insert shrink tubing on one of the wires, twist the bared ends of the wires together for a good mechanical connection, solder them together, and then cover the connection with shrink tubing and use the solder iron or a heat gun to shrink the tubing around the repair. Soldering is especially important if the wiring is in a car because of the huge temperature swings. It's really the most reliable method, by far. Crimp connectors are better than just twisting the wires together, but they will fail over time in automotive wiring. I don't have any experience with solderless connectors so I can't say one way or the other. But I would suspect they are about about like crimp connectors. You can use electrical tape if you don't have any shrink tubing, but electrical tape can slide off the repair and then you'll have bare wire which could short out to any metal.

Those are very similar to what I've used at work. They work well but you can damage the wire if you over-tighten them. And again, I wouldn't trust them for long term automotive use. Soldering is always your best bet. It's stronger than the wire itself if done correctly. It's easy to learn if you don't know how to solder. You just need a decent soldering iron and some practice.

Now, the rain delay is over so lets go racing boys!!!

I've been a NASCAR fan since I was a kid. I've only been to two actual Cup races (both in Phoenix). but I've watched practically every televised Cup race since 1985.

I went to Kansas Speedway two years ago April. It was the last race on the old track. Plan to go again. Maybe Texas this time.

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

When I was a kid the older kids with cars had it blaring from their radio while they polished wheels or the dads had it blasting from the garage... I rooted for Pearson mainly or the guy who was ahead of Richard Petty...
Life changed and I turned my interests on Sundays elsewhere for a while. I missed the entire Earnhardt rise, vs Tim Richmond and most of Waltrips hey day. I rooted for Tim Richmond but until Monday morning at work had no idea where he'd finished... all the buzz was this Elliott guy and Bobby's kid Davey. I watched it on ESPN... every now and then.

At some point I was dragged to the Richmond track as a designated driver. A day race that Alan Kulwicki and Bill Elliott dualed to a photo finish. We went to the track from then on. That is until a race Dale Jarret would've won if not for the green white checkers rule. Terri Labante had a better car, but.. it was Dale's race. Upon arriving at our vehicles after all our stuff was gone. Stolen. That was the last time we went if memory serves. I had 10 stellar seats.

Nowadays about the only name I recognize is Joe Nemechek.... so guys.. who won yesterday?

JU-NIOR!!! Hell of a race he drove too. I haven't seen that kind of fire from him in a long time. I really enjoyed watching that. So far 2014 is going great for me as far as sports goes...Seattle wins the SB, Junior wins Daytona...if the Spokane Shock (I know that the Mariners won't do anything, as usual) can win the Arena Bowl this summer I'll have a trifecta!

Re: Code 6 and blinking S3 light

My brother has been a seahawks fan since day 1 or 2... congrats guys.

I'm a closet Tony Stewart fan. But pull for anybody driving the Robert Yates car(s). It's a Ford thing. Yates was there... alone for a long time when the Wood bros weren't getting it done.
I respect Mr. Rousch, but lost a lot of respect for him when he acused Ray Everham of cheating when adding a pound of air propelled Jeff Gordon to victory lane a few years ago.

The Jr I pulled for is no longer active... Johnson.. the Ric Flair of stock car racing.
You either loved him or hated him.

You get your car going fatman?

I respect Mr. Rousch, but lost a lot of respect for him when he acused Ray Everham of cheating when adding a pound of air propelled Jeff Gordon to victory lane a few years ago.

The Jr I pulled for is no longer active... Johnson.. the Ric Flair of stock car racing.
You either loved him or hated him.

You get your car going fatman?
No. Rerunning that wire will have to wait for the weekend. Plus I need to buy wire, soldering iron, solder, and teach my self how to do it.

I've 'read' that the solder is brittle so vibrations can be an issue.

Vibration is really only a problem if you don't first twist the wires together to get a good mechanical connection before soldering. It's also known as a telegraph splice, or western union splice. Linky...

Nice tatt Fatman!

I'm sold. A blood knot of sorts... 'cept with wire instead of fly fishing line... solder is the icing on the cake... and shrink wrap the cherry on top.

Is that a middle east combat vet thing?
My car was reportedly owned by a marine. It came with the sticker shown in my avatar, but my inspector rejected my inspection because of the decal on the front window. A va thing. As you probably know the die cut sticker doesn't like being removed and re-stuck.
Gotta get around to replacing it. His 'hat pin' is still attached to my sun visor. I kinda figured it possible he got a promotion and pinned the private pin in the car.

The car came with dents and stories of how the marine put them there... think country roads, outta control car, chicken coop across the roof type thing...
I put band aids on the dents...

^^ the broad side of a barn dent.

^^ rolling backwards dent...

^^ My favorite... the roadside mailbox across the roof dent lol.

Lol. That's good stuff!! The Infidel thing is an OEF, OIF type thing. I, personally, have embraced the term. I'm free, treat women with respect, and treat my fellow man with equality, and I'm a sucker for a good pork tenderloin! If that makes me an Infidel, so be it. Just me.
