A Prelude coming my way?

Hey guys, I'm new here, actually only 14 but, there is a 3rd Generation Prelude at a used car dealership and it looks really good.

I doubt it's running as the asking price was 1,995$ and now it's just "Make Offer", so.. can you help me come up with a list of questions to ask, or what to look for?

Anything would be great as I think it would be a fun project car to learn on, plus I really love the way they look. :)

Thanks!
-Kuran

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Welcome to prelude zone young padowan. Glad to see you've decided to tap into the force.

$1995 does not mean it's not running. They go from $800 to about $1500 on the street depending on where you live.
Probably does mean it needs a lot of work though.
First, you must answer a question or two.
1) what year? /model/motor
2) carb or fuel injected?
3) how much rust near the wheels, behind the gas cap door and along the rails under the car?
4) how many miles on it.
5) auto or stick shift

For the dealer:
How much oil does it use should come right after does it run.

If it's a 5 speed they may demand a few hundred more than automatic. You may get the auto for $600 where they'd drop to a grand for 5 speed.

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Sorry, I don't know many of those questions, but I didn't see any obvious rust near the wheels, I've only ridden by it on the bus and today in my mothers car. (Civic Si, hehe) Should I use the questions you asked me to them? I haven't seen it up close or talked to them yet. I'm just anxious for this car.

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Okay, so I went on craigslist and I found it, it's a base (or just lesser model), automatic, with maybe a few options. Miles on website say "exempt"?

Apparently it runs, tell me what you think. ( Would be doing a manual swap on it, then if I really want to, an engine swap ) But remember, this is a project car for me!

1991 Honda Prelude SI - RUNS GREAT!!

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Well you answered all the questions by showing the ad.

It's a S model. Ad says Si. Hmmmm Si has electric windows and alloy wheels.

Pic appears to have 220+k miles...

It has the original rear license plate holder and appears the electric antenna works.
Signs the car was taken care of. Paint looks marvelous.

You are 14. That gives you at least two years to fix what ails and learn how to do all those upgrades you hope to do.

Offer them $1000 cash. No more than $1500... you should be able to find one for that price elsewhere if they won't take your offer.

Yeah, what Bykfixer said. It looks pretty good! Rust is your worst enemy my friend. 2 years would be long enough to sort out a manual swap too ;)

Your information is inaccurate. If it's a 91 it can't be an S model. Carb'd 3rd gens were only available thru 90. A base model in 91 was a 2.0Si. It is fuel injected and has the b20a5 engine. It also had manual windows and mirrors.

I would stay away from that car. It's not obvious at first glance, but in the 3rd picture (looking at the left rear), you can see significant damage in the rear quarter panel. That's probably why they dropped the price and listed it for make offer. I would keep looking. Since you're in Florida it shouldn't be too tough to find a rust free 3rd gen.

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Hard to argue with a man who's right. lol

But is the B20a5 not an iron sleeve block vs the frm sleeved B21a1?
If so that seems to be less prone to ring failure, right?

Seems to this guy that would be a better platform to start with. Young padowan could fix the body damage in the 2 years he would have to get it ready. He stated he wants to do a 5 speed swap etc anyway.

I agree, there could be better ones available. But sometimes in life we see something we want and grab it. So with that said mr. Kuran, grab up an adult role model in your life and go visit the dealership. Give said grown up a list of items to discuss with the salesman and see where it goes.
But.... do NOT finance from the dealer. 28% or more?
Cash in all your gift cards to a big bank as a downpayment on a signature loan with a co-signer if you don't have the cash.

Btw your mom's car rox. What year is it?

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Yes that's right, the b20a5 does not have the same FRM sleeves that the b21a1 has. But I wouldn't buy a 3rd gen based on which engine it has. Engines can be swapped out for little expense if someone does it themselves. And he's got a couple years to do that if he wants. But to be honest, the b21a1 is a better platform since it's OBD1. It gives you options for tuning. The b21a1 is a good engine. It's gotten a bad reputation. I've owned them before and I would buy another one. It will still outrun a b20a5 even after it starts burning oil. The main thing is to make sure you keep it full of oil, even if that means adding some every day.

The car in those pics has crush damage. He's not gonna be able to just pop those dents out and fill it with bondo. It's not just sheet metal damage. It's probably got structural damage as well. In this case, the car otherwise looks great. It would probably serve as a great first car. My main concern would be how save he would be if it took an impact to the left rear. Uni-body cars are very safe...for the first impact. But the integrity of the crush panels are affected and may not withstand more damage if hit in the same place.

It's easy for us to sit here and tell this kid whether or not to buy it based on a few low resolution pictures. The best thing for him would be have someone local who knows what to look for look at the damage. Including from inside the trunk. And they would be better suited to help him decide if it's something he wants to get into or not. If I was considering that car, I'd take it for a test drive and go straight to a body shop to have them give an estimate on repairing it.

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

The thing he said here which is key, is that he said its a Project car, which means that it will sit for most of its life and not be on the road until it been worked over.

So I say go for it, its not bad of a car to start for a 16 year old(when he can actually drive it I mean) to start with.

But my recommendation OP, is you do your research throughly. This chassis is not supported very much, as a matter of fact I am on of the few businesses that actually support this chassis but the parts I sell are not cheap and they are for those who can afford it.

You can try to scavange as much as you can from a junkyard, but in the end you will need to establish a paypa account and get used to dealing with fellow 3rd genners across the Nation and the Globe for parts that are discontinued.

It is not for the faint of heart. That rear quarter damage is significant and will need to addressed. I do not know what your resources are so I cannot speculate on what you can and cant do, but the cost to fix that is going to be more than payed for the car.
And that is probably before you even get it back on the road.

I more than anyone on here would telly you to jump on it, but you must know the truths about our chassis. Those of us who support and run this chassis are Prelude freaks so we will do whatever it takes to make our ludes better, but for those just looking for an easy project this is not the car for you.

I wish you well, and if you decide to get this car and when you are ready for traction bar, H22 swap mounts, Ksport suspension, or Cometic MLS head gasket for the B20/21 and also the powersteering reroute line which I recommend so you never need to deal with that OEM line that will burst and leak and cause a fire over the exhaust manifold, just contact me: 1funryd@comcast.net

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Bottom line in my opinion is it would be a great car to learn your way through the processes of fixing a car front to rear, top to bottom, inside and out. And if there's a carport available it will stay in good condition while it is being repaired. You can learn to drive correctly and safely with an automatic then move onto a stick at the proper time.

Now if you want a rocket and have a nasa budget, you can end up achieving your goal. But much studying will be required to ensure you don't end up with a bottle rocket.. a device that takes off and goes real fast but doesn't last long.

Okay, a USED car dealership, please don't tell me it's not when I ride by it everyday. Seriously people. Also, Byk, I'm going with my mother this weekend to look at it... isn't it a B21A? I looked up what it looked like and they seem to match pretty closely from what I see. What should I worry about since I hear they guzzle oil?

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

Oh yeah, one more thing Byk, I can already drive a stick, (moms Civic Si), I don't have any trouble with it, it's easy and fun, but an automatic will help me get the basics of just driving around. So I see what you are saying and you are great help. Thanks for all the support guys.

I think that has a 2.0.. no oil guzzle.

Look on the passenger side of the block... either b20xx or b21xx

Let us know what you find out...

Re: A Prelude coming my way?

How much horsepower does each engine have? (I'm a teen, this totally matters because rack0ar. [Not really, I would love on this thing forever, no coffee-can mufflers!])

And it's more-so an added bonus that I get more than 50 as well, this is just a cool car.

I looked up what it looked like and they seem to match pretty closely from what I see. What should I worry about since I hear they guzzle oil?
Like I said in an earlier post, it's a b20a5. They look very similar but there are a couple very obvious differences. Here is a b21a1. Notice at the end of the intake plenum, there is a single large hose coming off and runs around the brake master cylinder reservoir. And there are no o2 sensors in the exhaust manifold.

Here is a b20a5. You can see that along with the large hose, there are several smaller vacuum lines coming off the end of the intake plenum. And there are two o2 sensors in the exhaust manifold, or in this case, the header. (sorry for the giant pic)

The definitive proof is the engine code stamp, located where the yellow arrow is pointing.
