Trim around windows ....

What do you all do when the black material is all chipping and peeling off...how do you go about fixing it?? just rough it up and repaint it?

Just looking for options before doing it myself if someone else has a helpful hint.
Thanks!
Dave

buy new ones form the dealer **** they are like 100 bucks for both of them scuffing them and painting them is a little hard because they thend to peel and its a vinal coating so when you paint it youll see the line from the vinal but it works

yeah, I was talking about the part that is apparently chrome but then vinyl coated. I think I just came up with a new idea!! my buddy has black vinyl...for decals. I will just scrape it, clean it and lay over shiny black vinyl.

Thanks for suggestions..and ultimately helping me make up my mind lol.

My co-worker/friend who helped me check out the lude b4 I bought it,
scraped that ugly looking stuff off with a razor blade, and then he spray
painted the trim. It looks good now, but he said that he'd prolly have to
spray paint them again in the future because it'll chip off.

well i mean, it took A while for most of the black to chip off, why would it not last if it already has the entire time?

Why not just use a good vinyl paint and clear coat it?

They have some really good paint, check it out.

I sped-read the posts... Esentially, the best thing to do about the peeling black is to:
1. Go factory (oemftmfw)
2.Get wheel well rubber application ( you don't even have to scrape) and border off the paint with masking tape and voila...
3.Scrape and apply(it's called trim seal... i think) basically weather strips that replace worn shrunk window trim like on our cars.

Did that on my last car, its very messy, takes forever to dry, and is chalky when it dries finally. Not a good looking finish.

Well, I never said the finish would be perfect, but the chalkyness?IDK about that. Besides, we're talking about a 10-20$ solution that takes one afternoon vs. taking one day for scraping, prepping, possibly sanding, then applying expensive tape that if you scew up the first time, get your wallet ready to buy some more. On 3rd gens that is notorious!

anyway that's why it's my .02$, that's about all it's worth... :flame:

1. You are lazy
2. Expensive tape?? are you EFFING KIDDING ME? Granted mine cost me ZERO to do and I didnt spend more than 5 mins on the whole process. Is it perfect...hell no, but neither is my 16 year old car.

Lazy? Using black masking/duct tape is lazy. I thought hard about that wheel-well crap. The only reason I say it's expensive, is because the tape im talkng about is 7.00$ a roll and does like one window trim.) If you have an suv. that's six windows (42.00). You can't return the unused portion for a refund.

BTW, spending 5 minutes instead of an afternoon sanding, smoothing, the surface so that the new trim seals with no pocktes and adhears for another 10 years IS LAZY. I mean, I can do a write up or hold your hand along the way, or here's an even strangers concept: Ignore my advice. YOU Fixed your trim. (in five minutes) All I do is explain all the sensible options, which you asked for, And you call me lazy. If you wanted to just see yourself type out a thread, Voila mission accomplished. But stop wasting webspace if you've already got the answers to your problems.

lol....I was in a bad mood when I posted that...maybe it was uncalled for. and for that I apologize man.

Anyhow. it will last years just like it does on cars with vinyl. Its really easy and can be cheap if you look around for the best deal on vinyl you can find.

Good luck with whatever you do. If the new ones are that cheap...thats a pretty good alternative too. :)

Nah. no big Deal, RamAirDave. I don't have to worry about that no more(prelude-less). I'm from another forum (shall remain nameless) that people would ask for information, then get snippy because it wasn't what they wanted to hear. (more like they asked the wrong question, so they get the wrong answer) If the vinyl works put some pics up So i can see what you're talking about. bet you money its the same thing... LOL
