Don't!
Just buy a short shifter you'll be a lot happier with it.

Cut 1 inch. It'll make a big difference...my friend did that on his 3rd gen and it felt a lot easier...though, i like the tall shifter for the positive action.

Thing is, it is ALREADY SHORT. Go drive a civic or accord. The prelude shifter is noticeably shorter, and it is the height it is so you have a minimal distance from the steering wheel to the shifter. Shortening it will make that distance longer.

Someone told me that the gear stick it designed to bend or snap under pressure (if you crash) but if you cut it it'll act like a spear. But I might still do it

Cutting the shifter doesn't shorten the throws... Brain... come on bro... you already read this discussion.

Extending the bottom half under the pivot will shorten the throw.

Cutting the shifter only makes it harder to shift, as you're reducing leverage. which is a no-no. True circuit cars even extend the shifter to improve leverage and make shifting smoother and easier.

So, I'm assuming the 3rd gen uses a linkage shifter like the Civic/Integra? If someone could pull theirs out and measure the size of the change ball, as well as the ball seat, I might be able to provide some useful insight into adapting a Civic shifter

I believe it's a shift cable and not a linkage...

Exactly why cutting a shifter is retarded. Especially since 'ludes already have short shifters.

Just looked it up and you're right, but it's very different from the 4/5th gen cable setup. They basically used a linkage-style shifter, but put cable hook ups on it

basically, unlike newer preludes, we still have the pivot ball setup.

And yes the stock shifter is pretty short. I had a member on a different forum make a race spec short throw shifter for me. uber tight and close, then I added 4 inches uptop to keep the shifter closer to the steering wheel. I loved it.

this thread is ridicoulous, how could you possibly belive that cutting the rod of a shifter would make the throws shorter? its the same pole moving through the gears the actully lower rods are whats making the shifter enable the activation of the gears

Its not that it makes the throws shorter. The stock shifter is awkwardly high and cutting it down made a hell of a lot of difference in comfort as far as I am concerned. I loved it shorter, but thats just my personal opinion here.

^I agree with you.

Mario: I never said cutting the shifter made the throws shorter, it just felt a lot better. Sobelazy cut 1 inch on his shifter and when I drove his car, it felt really nice.

But as Mario(Team123)is saying, he's right. Extending the bottom half under the pivot will shorten the throw. That's what Ko_Si's shifter did when I had it on my car for that brief time:

Ko_Si Short shifter:

I liked the short shifter, but finding the correct shift knob was a journey. That Spoon knob hurt, and the throws felt notchy. I prefer the stock shifter anyday of the week.

Did you play with the adjustment at the shifter cables? You must take up the added slack with the short throw... it'll make shifts easier.

I did a little.
I drove to work and realized, "I dont speed shift in the city." --better put, you can't speed in Manhattan (unless you are racing on the west side highway with DMX & the ruff riders LOL!)

It was more of a nuisance having it on my car...so I traded it for a set of wheels
