HELP!

Hi everyone. I'm new to the prelude. I own a 91 Si with a b21a1 motor. bought it a couple months ago and tried to clean it up and get it back to health unfortunately it will not start now. I have replaced the starter, rebuilt the throttle body/plenum, new spark plugs, new main relay, new distributor with new cap and rotor, set everything back to TDC. engine cranks and will not fire. it gets spark and air have done compression test on a cold motor panned out ok about 120 psi per cyl. no huge discrepancy between the cylinders. only thing i have not checked is the fuel pressure at the rail.

If anyone has a clue why it will not start please hit me up.

Thanks everyone

Re: HELP!

Have you checked the fuel pump? I would try that first. Make sure you check the fuel pump fuse too. Just turn the car on (not crank) and listen. You should be able to hear it.

Alternatively, I like to detach the fuel line from the fuel filter under the hood and have someone turn the key, if gasoline comes out (with a decent amount of force) you can probably rule out the fuel pump.

Re: HELP!

Well unfortunately for me the fuel pump does work.. it makes noise when key is on and there is pressure to the fuel filter.

Re: HELP!

Assuming it ran before you did all of that work on it? If so, then it's most likely something you did when you replaced all of that stuff. The first thing to do is to make sure you got everything plugged back in and installed correctly. Check to make sure you didn't install the distributor 180 degrees out. The shaft is asymetrical, but it's still possible to get it in there that way.

Does it sound "normal" while it's cranking?

Re: HELP!

I'm glad you got it running!

You have an electric speedometer in your 91. There is no cable like there is in older ludes. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is mounted to the transmission and has an electrical connection. It's located on the transmission housing, below the distributor. Make sure that the connector is plugged in.

Do you have any trouble codes stored? If you're not sure how to check for that, click on this link...
ECU Error Codes

Drive the car to any auto parts store near you and have them check the charging system. They will usually do this for free. They can tell you if your battery or the alternator is the problem.

I can't help you with the auto transmission issue. I've never owned a 3rd gen with an automatic.

Re: HELP!

Re: HELP!

You didn't say if you're checked for trouble codes or not. If the VSS is bad you should have a code stored (code 17). Click the link in my previous post if you don't know how to check the codes. And yes, you will probably reset the ecu if you disconnect the battery. Check anyway. It's easy to do.

Re: HELP!

I wonder if the speedo going bad is a common thing because mine is fried too. I just drive around using the tachometer for now, takes a little while to get used to, but a new speedo is not cheap!

Re: HELP!

11 volts isn't enough. Need a new alt. Should be between 13.25 to 14.25 volts while running.

Re: HELP!

Have the battery tested. Any auto parts store can do this for you, usually for no charge. In fact, they can usually test the entire charging system if you take the car there.
