Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

Well, I can tell you I have been looking for quite some time for a prelude. Actually saw a 5 gen that looked promising, turned out to be beaten to hell and just plain dirty, couldn't even tell if there were leaks or not, the oil and grease was everywhere.

Went after that to look at everything from late 90's TLs to Accords from the early 00s. Finally went back to looking for a clean Prelude and came across a 1990 4WS model with a nice red paint job, clean wheels, and a rebuilt tranny. Only 174k on the odo (could be more, it needs a new speed sensor). Anyway the guy is asking 5k for it, which I know is kind of steep. However, they are rare and the exterior as well as interior looks pretty great for a car so old.

My question is what I should pay for it, and how rare are they really? Mind you I am in South Florida.

Here's the link: Rare 1990 Honda Prelude 4ws

Please do help me. . . would be greatly appreciated

Oh and I already know about the beloved search tab haha.

Re: Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

174k is a lot of miles, all though not that much for how old it is. Honestly with the rebuilt tranny and 174k I would PERSONALLY pay 4300-4500 for it. Maybe even less but 5k is too much. I already know someone is going to correct me on the price but i'm just being honest.

Re: Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

5k is way overpriced. 5k can get you into some pretty solid 5th gens. Hell, I paid 2800 for my 95 base model and realized that I overpaid by a couple hundred bucks, and it was at 162k miles.

yes its clean, it looks good, and the 4ws is nice, but its not worth that much imo

Well said, after thinking about it I would probably pay 3300, to 3500. Good way to put it Nessie!

Re: Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure how much this guy thinks his car is worth, but I knew 5k was steep. Exactly as Nessie put it: for that money I can be looking at some decent 5th gens. Sucks that most of them on the road (not that there is a lot) have been driven to hell.

It would be really hard to pass up a deal like this, it is one of the cleaner 3rd gens around my area.

Save as much money as possible when buying a Lude because you'll need it later to fix it.

I wouldn't pay more than 2800 for that.... To old, miles to high and the CSS is disconnected so the miles may possibly be twice that. Rebuilt tranny, does these have receipts and why'd it blow on the first plave

^^This is closer to what it's worth. I was actually thinking between $2200-$2500 because of the little bit of work it needs. And it's not the original paint. Nice looking 3rd gen though. For it to even approach $5k it would have to have less than 50K miles on it. 3rd gens aren't rare in the US. Maybe they are where you live, but you could do some research online to find one somewhere where they're not considered rare (WA, CA, AZ, TX...), spend a few hundred to fly there and pay half of what they're asking. Or keep looking in your area. But that car is not worth anywhere near what they're asking.

Re: Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

I paid around $2200 (after everything was fixed) for my super clean '91 (non-4ws) with 140K on the odometer, but I figured I got real lucky finding a 3rd gen in that good a shape to begin with.

But honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Make him an offer, if he doesn't budge, move on.

(But an SiStates...hmmmmm)

He says he bought it and started to restore it for his son, but he got another car and now he wants to sell it. If he thinks that he can seriously get 5k for the car, then a 3k offer will be quite a lowball in his mind. . . I'll see what's up though.

Yeah, 5k is a lot for that one. It all comes down to how much someone wants a car to be honest. I know people who have spent more than they should have on a car, but they got what they wanted and were willing to pay that much. So it was worth it to them.

Yea he even passed up 3700. Apparently people are actually willing to pay 5 grand for that car. I'm not that stupid. Thanks for all the info from everyone, hopefully I'll be able to find one that good for the right price!

Re: Yes, noob making the plunge into the lude world. . .

If it was closer, I would definitely be interested, it is SUPER clean. I'm in South Florida, and I start school in a week, so I won't have time to travel too far out of the way once it starts. I am open to pretty much any lude that is '90+ with less than 200k on the odo. (And clean). Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
