Re: quick question with a/c

Your AC system will need to be retrofit for R134. R12 is illegal now.

Yeah. I just found that out at autozone. Any ball park figure as to how much that normally costs?

Re: quick question with a/c

R134a is like $15/can now.

Before you add anything, you should find out if the problem is with a low-pressure issue, or electrical.

Re: quick question with a/c

I ave a question. I am about to drive to Arkansas like a 13 hr drive in 110 degree weather with the Gf so I need ac. Last time I did it without ac but I also didn't bring a female. How can I check if the condenser is working? Its been retrofitted to r134 and theirs pressure in the lines. Just hot air!

How much pressure?

If the entire system is R-134a compatible, it will hold 35-50psi at 1200 RPMs. If the lines and stuff are still the old R-12 parts, you might be able to safely have 12-30psi. I recommend using the minimum safest pressure on an R-12 setup. The first parts to blow are the o-rings and the discharge line.

You should also check the valve on the heater core closes to it's maximum position. If it is open even the tiniest bit, it will make the AC feel like it is not doing it's job. I had this issue once too. After maximizing the cable adjustment, the AC gets cold enough I turn the fan to 2 after about 5 minutes.

Re: quick question with a/c

if you don't want to convert to r134a, go to a shop that specializes in old cars. i found that most VW shops still have r12 and are willing to recharge it for a decent price. i got quoted at $130 for a vac and recharge at this vw shop in turlock called tumazis. r12 is ALOT colder than r134a

Re: quick question with a/c

R12 is not much colder than R134a. However, R12 in a R134a system is not as cold as R12 in and R12 system, or R134a in a R134a system. There are a lot of myths out there.

Look out for shops claiming to have R12. Some shops will have a R12/propane mix, or even Freeze12 but sell it as R12.

Re: quick question with a/c

Went to Wal-Mart yesterday and they had r-134 for 9 dollars a can. Think Autozone and Advance had it for 14 bucks.

Re: quick question with a/c

$9 is a good deal. 2-3 years ago I got R-134a at Big Lots for $4.50/can. Now, it's $14-$15 per can.

Re: quick question with a/c

Lolz I just got to it, and blam!! The manual was not as helpful as I hoped. It did however point me in the right direction once I got to the heater core. So I found out the valve does close all the way for cold powaaa however right when I was about to do a pressure test, my conversion I did 2 years ago kinda came off so the low side port was hardly held on and no o ring. Wish I could go back on time an slap da shut outta my old self. So I used thread tape and a wrench tightened it and now I need to recharge te system. Sorry environment
