New with a question

I might as well bundle my first post with my first question. XD
I've been lurking these forums for about a month now and just now finally made the jump. I'm a 20 year old named Josh living in (you guessed it) Oregon. I recently bought a 1989 Prelude 2.0s after i was hit by a semi truck in my 86 subaru XT =(.

Its my first stick, but i got it down pretty quick=].
my car doesn't have any issues as far as i can tell.( except the miles[222k])

SO my question is this:

My car has everything stock except for the Radio and it has wires leading to the trunk i am assuming for a sub or something. I bought a 12" dual sub in a box and i need to know what i need to get it hooked up. I am not electronically smart ha. I assume an amp? and if so how many watts can i draw without raping my battery?

Any help and I would be grateful

Oh i Will be adding pics later on today. gotta get it picture ready

Yes, pics plz! Welcome! It's awesome you had a Subaru XT, I'm sure 95% of car people don't even know what one is (I would like to see pics of that too). Nice that you're keeping it old school!

As far as the speaker thing, I'm sure there are ppl that could help you there. As for me, additional weight = slower car

I disagree, what you do is toss the sub at your opponent while racing to slow him/her down. LOL

It's painful to see a rare 4WD Turbo TX bite the dust.

Welcome dude, glad you're okay from the wreck! Get up some pics of the Prelude for sure.

As for the radio..what kinda wires are you seeing? If you think it's wired for a stereo system already, look at the positive battery terminal to see if you can find another wire hooked up to it that gets routed through the firewall, or into a fender or something that matches what you're already seeing. That will be the power source for an amplifier.

Where are you seeing the wires exposed, anyway :P in the trunk? Post a pic of them here to see if we can identify them for you.

Re: New with a question

In this pic, it seems like the one on the left should be power judging by the gsuge of the wire, and the one on the right is mostly likely the preamp wire that would connect to the back of your headunit, so that the amp turns off when you shut the car off. The wires in the middle are probably speaker wire/RCA cables that fed the amplifier the audio signal. The pic you took of the wire that's drilled to the body, that's the ground wire. Follow all these to see where they go to see if my assumptions are correct.

Re: New with a question

This is the power wire for sure. That box should have a fuse in it. Make sure that's not hooked to the battery anywhere;

Re: New with a question

the power runs to underneath the passenger floor, where is is just coiled up. not connected to the battery.

the other wires go to the back of the radio

Re: New with a question

Okay cool. That set of wires could save you anywhere between $50-$90 if you end up getting your own system so that's cool. Eventually you'll wanna get that power wire through the firewall and up to the battery to power your amplifier.

If the previous owner did it right, when you pull out your head unit to inspect, the single blue wire should have a label on it where they connected it that will tell you exactly what it's for, something like 'Preamp','Preout', 'Remote', or something to that effect. Like I mentioned, that is what should turn the amp on and off with your key, so the big wire doesn't keep it powered on 24/7.

The wires that split is what has me baffled a little. Usually if it's run directly to the head unit, the left channel will be a white RCA connection, and the right will be a red one. You'll definitely want to see how it's hooked to the back of the headunit. Maybe it's just feeding off a random L/R channel that's supposed to go to one of your stock speakers? Or maybe it's an actual RCA cable the previous owner just cut up because he had a crappy amplifier that only had L/R audio wire inputs. I dunno, whatever. Seeing how they connect to the head unit is the next step.

Re: New with a question

Yup. Depending on how it's installed, you might just be able to pull it out without having to take the dash bezzel off around it. Before you go tugging on it, search through the 3G Prelude section to see if anyone else has done a stereo swap and posted how-to or pictures. I have a 4G and can just pull my head unit out, dunno if yours is the same.

Re: New with a question

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your carbie lude!! Take care of her and she'll last you a long time.

I have an 89 S and an 89 Si, both have 4ws. Both are fun to drive. The Si is faster, and I've done a lot of upgrades on the suspension and brakes. The S is bone stock (except for a mild racing cam), but it drives smooth as silk for daily driving and winter use.

Welcome! Enjoy your stay here!

Who cares about the prelude. (J/P, LOL) you had the Turbo XT? The progenitor to the SVX? CRAZY! That's like subaru's prelude! Next thing someone gonna whip out their Justy! I'm going Subaru Justy hunting! What are they 300.00 nowadays?

Re: New with a question

Ok, with a bandpass box, it will hit much louder if you point the ports to the front of the car.

I have tested this theory in 2 different 3rd gen Preludes. In 2007 I used two 12's to hit 139.5Db with a bandpass pointed forward and the seat down. It scored significantly less when pointed rearward (like 128Db or some other weaksauce).

You will hear differently from other people who assume all subs should be aimed at the rear. Ignore them or have it measured by a shop. However, I offer you real test results that have won trophies with real numbers.

In a Prelude, it doesn't matter, just point the bandpass box forward for best results. Don't believe me? Go take your own measurements and post them up like I did. Pointing it backwards is like wasting your money.
