1991 EGR code but EGR is new

It's a code 12 and the EGR is new. I see other posts where the egr "ports" are clogged and need to be cleaned but those are for newer generations and I wonder if I need to do the same for mine. It's an automatic, 1991 2.0. Suggestions? It's running bad and is prone to stalling. I'll keep looking for more info this but if you have any suggestions let's hear them and thanks-

Re: 1991 EGR code but EGR is new

EGR ports need to be cleaned on everything from an old Datsun 510 to the newer cars although if the car runs badly, I am more inclined to believe the EGR is sticking in the open position.
Check the vacuum lines going to the EGR as well as connections going to the solenoid that triggers the EGR. You can try also checking continuity of the solenoid with a multimeter to see if the solenoid is good. The ECU will tell you it's EGR but will not tell you what part of the EGR system is failing.

Re: 1991 EGR code but EGR is new

My egr doesn't even work but I have no code. Your egr solenoid must be opening cause you're getting vacuum to your egr to make the engine run like crap.As long as everything else is good. When you pull vacuum on a egr at idle the engine should just about die. That also means that your ports probably aren't clogged. Yes you have 4 small ports inside the intake manifold. The egr sensor on the top is probably sticking. If you don't need emissions yet, Take off the vacuum hose going to the egr and it should run perfect like mine.

Re: 1991 EGR code but EGR is new

The code is thrown because the EGR is either not lifting, or the lift is not being detected by the ECU. If it is stalling, then it is stuck open and again, the ECU sees it as not working the way it should.

Check and make sure the vacuum/electrical line to the EGR is in good shape and connected right. You do not want just any old vacuum line connected to it. You want to correct vacuum line connected.
