IT'S ALIVE!!! sort of

The over haul is complete and it runs good, though I may need to adjust the idle a bit. But now I have found a new problem. after I have started the car (a 90 Si with 5 speed) and run long enough to get the engine temp up and see good indications, if I shut the car off, I cannot get it to restart. And after I crank it a bit, I smell fuel, almost like its flooded. Is this a sensor issue, or maybe a fuel injector thats leaking fuel into the engine after shut down?

I'm pretty sure you should be throwing a check engine light...

Could be a bad injector...it's hard to find a injector leak as it's colorless...you can smell it for sure. Check your fuel filter, the banjo bolt for leaks there; if it's leaking, it should stain the black fuel filter somewhat...or just run your finger around the bolt...

what overhaul did you do?

IT's Alive

The overhaul on the B20A5 was complete. I had it bored .040 over (to remove corrosion in #2), and a complete valve job as well. Plus, both block and head had to be planed. Someone had realy overheated this one.
I did not replace the injectors, but did notice some discoloration of the tips of each one. Also, I did not change out the fuel filter. Oh, and the check engine light is on constant. I did not know if maybe a connection had been missed or a fault was being indicated. Guess its time to check the codes.

Ok, I just checked the codes and the only one showing is "6" for coolant temperature. Is this a current code, or could it be hanging over from before the overhaul, since I was watching the gauge and saw no unusal temps the 3 times that I have run the engine since?
(also, nothing about the injectors, which i think is code 16)

Hey Dllang777,
How much cost and time went into overhualing your b20a5?
The reason I ask is that I am going to(later) do about the exact same thing to mine.
port and polish
bore it out a little
and clean up the insides.

Oh, and sorry for straying for your orignal subject.
I hope you can get it up and running well.

No prob, 89'si4ws. let's see, there was $350 for the TopLine over haul kit, $40 for the new water pump, $720 to the machine shop for boring, polishing, plaining both head and block, valve job and cleaning. So around $1200 or so. As to the time, I took the engine apart a little at a time over about 3 weeks. Then between engine shop and the ordering of parts, that spanned 2 weeks. The re-assemby took me one weekend. (lets say I was ready to get running).

Now, in addition to my 5 o clock post, I did a run of several miles and noted that the water temp stayed just below mid range, but the check engine light stayed on. Then after shutdown, it would not restart for several hours (until it had completely cooled down). Again, a strong fuel smell, like you would get from fuel flooding.
Another observation, the connector that goes to the sensor at the lower right corner of the radiator is broken. So the wires are simply pluged in. It they are reversed, might that cause the temp fault?

sweet, less than i expected.
though the time variable would kill me, school..
maybe I can start and finish it over christmas break haha( a dream )
But yea thanks.

When you get it up and running post a vid i wanna hear this baby roar :]
Long live b20's!

I have little experience taking apart engines, but I'd say if you cant find out what is wrong, take it apart, replace what you didnt replace and put carefully back together again. I know your anxious to drive it, but put some more time into it... haha, but im inexperienced so you dont have to listen to anything i've said haha.

The hardest time variable is the engine shop time and the parts ordering time, which affect one another. The rest is up to your schedule.

A local mechanic resolved the Hot engine-no start problem by swapping two connectors at the thermostat housing. (honda failed to make everything idiot proof). Now to fix that darned check engine indication.

repairing the broken wire on one of those two connectors did the trick. Check engine light is now out. YEA
