Just bought a 91 si

with 218,000 miles. All electronics worked; aftermarket sound system, ran smoothly. But, the previous owner didn't have a manual so I want to ask you guys a few things...

- What grade of fuel do you use? He said he used midgrade
- On the way home, the seat belt alarm started beeping. I opened and closed the door and it went off. Has this happened to anyone else?
- How much oil should I expect to replace per month/or any other interval
- Any other advice? I checked the belt and it looked like it was replaced recently. I'm not very car saavy fyi. Thanks..

Re: Just bought a 91 si

Welcome to the forum

-I've always used 87 octane but that's not a requirement.
-Seatbelt chime - use the search function - Honda Prelude Forum - Search Results
-If it's the b21a1 motor, then always carry an extra bottle(or two) in your trunk. Those motors tend to burn oil...see this thread:B21a1 owners hollah at your boy!!
-Check out the 3rd gen resource guide - Official 3rd gen Resource Thread

remember, this is an old car dont expect everything to be cool as the other side of the pillow.

Re: Just bought a 91 si

In addition to what Prelude13 said, don't trust a visual inspection of the timing belt. You have too much to lose if the belt breaks or slips. If you can't get documented proof of when the belt was replaced, it's in your best interest to go ahead and replace it (along with the tensioner and water pump) as soon as you can. Too many people take chances with this and end up regretting it.

Congrats on your new lude!! And welcome to your new addiction.

Re: Just bought a 91 si

So the apartment had my car towed before I could tag it. Now it won't start. The little green light around the keyhole doesn't light up, nothing works...The tow guy said to not drive it for 7 to 8 days. Anyone know what's up?

You're gonna have to provide more information before we can be of much help. From what you described I'd say the battery is dead. Does the engine crank at all? Do any of the lights work? Stereo?

Re: Just bought a 91 si

Yea, it was the battery. That seems fine now. Right now I want to clean the engine bay with some water/degreaser. So will I be fine if I just cover the battery and alternator with plastic bags?

Re: Just bought a 91 si

Cover the alternator for sure. I usually cover the distributor too. I've never covered the battery. Not sure why you would really need to.

Re: Just bought a 91 si

Bag and rag the ignition coil, igniter, alternator, distributor, fuse box, and don't spray the valve cover directly. Sometimes water can seep past the plug wire seals.

SuperClean mixed 50/50 with water works really great.

After cleaning, soak the bay in ArmorAll while it is still wet. Just spray it on plastic and metal to prevent corrosion, rust, or fading. It works like magic I'm tellin ya!
