How much is this 91 Prelude worth?

Hi all,

I just got my license last week, and I have been looking at buying my first car for awhile now. My dad and I just went to check out a 91 Prelude 2.0 Si with 186,000 miles on it yesterday, and we are taking it to the mechanic today to have it checked over, just to make sure there's nothing majorly wrong with it mechanically. I loved this car when we went to check it out, and if it checks out today, there's a good chance I will be buying it, but I wanted to get the forum's opinion on how much I should pay for it.

The guy is asking $1,500, but he said he will go down on the price. Without the mechanic looking at it, the only things I know wrong with it right now is:

-There is some rust damage on it, near the wheel wells and the fenders, not too bad though, and not extremely noticeable.

-The car is pretty dirty on the inside and out, and will take some time to clean it.

-It needs new tires, and is missing a hubcap on the front driver's side wheel.

-He said the sunroof has a small leak, but from looking around at the car and online I'm fairly sure it just needs the drain pipes unclogged.

-He also said the muffler is missing a pipe somewhere underneath the car, and the muffler itself is being tied in place, and is not properly attached.

-It also has a small and slow oil leak, which the owner said he thinks is a valve cover.

-The radio currently doesn't work, which isn't a big deal as I would probably be putting a new stereo in it anyways, and it is missing an A/C knob, which again, isn't a big deal.

Knowing what I just mentioned what would you say the car is worth. My dad thinks it's only worth about $800, but I myself would probably be willing to pay $1,000, maybe a little more. I have about $3,000 so I will have plenty of money left over to pay the mechanic to do the work that needs done and to just generally fix it up a little bit.

Here are some pics of the car from the Craigslist ad, though they aren't of the best quality.

Thanks for your time, and thanks for looking!

Don't do it Dude, I wound up in a bad way thinking like that. I got an 89 SI a few months ago for about $1,500 and cost another $1,100 in repairs. Your Dad is right, it's gonna cost a lot to get that thing in good shape. You're better off looking for one in better condition for about $1,500 to $1,800 and then putting the rest of the money into the motor or some nice wheels, they are out there but you got to look hard. For your first car I would stick with the 3rd Gen lude its cheap on parts, good on gas and just awesome.

This one is my car:

Skip it, period. Find one that's in much better condition and is as original as possible. Please.

Yeah it's honestly not even worth the time and the effort. You can easily find a near perfect 3rd gen for under $3k

Even mine, I put it on sale for 2200, it's in perfect mechanical condition, the interior is more that fair and the body is in damn good shape. If someone paid me 2500, I would have it painted and all the dings/damaged panels replaced. Skip it skip it skip it.

If you wanted to buy that pos lude you posted, offer them 300 dollars cash. At the most.

You can get a decent 4th gen in pretty good shape for less than 3k too

Re: How much is this 91 Prelude worth?

Thanks guys, I did end up skipping it. The mechanic said it needed a completely new muffler system, and that the rust had spread to the gas tank and axles and those could need replaced soon, as well as the engine and some other minor stuff not being in very good condition; He said it was a death trap and worth $250 tops.

There are a few 4th gens in my area I will be looking at soon, and I'm going today to look at a 97 BMW 318i in good condition.

Thanks again guys!

Re: How much is this 91 Prelude worth?

buy it... buy it and do all the work yourself. Everybody's gotta learn sometime and its never gonna happen if you dont love your car. I had an escort before my lude and did almost nothing to keep it going but my lude has seen more love and i've learned soo much its crazy... My vote... buy it, love it, and learn it
