Charging system!!!

so i'm having a problem with my charging system i think i have an idea whats going on but i just wanted to see if anybody else has had the same problem..??? it'll be good for a little while but then its not charging the battery and the people that had it before me had changed the alternator like 3 times so i looked it up and i found something about the rear defogger switch, i guess its putting a parasitic drain on the battery but let me know what you guys have encountered please!!! thanks much.

Re: Charging system!!!

OK, If it's the Defroster, Unplug the connection or pull the fuse. If you still have a dead battery after the fact, We will need some more input:
-Battery's Age
-Amps of the Alternator, with age
-What kind of electrical accessories does the car have (radio/ alarm/ Auto-start/ Speakers& subwoofers, etc etc)
-How much diagnosing have you done, if any.

Keep us updated! and show some pics, We love Preludes here.

Re: Charging system!!!

i pulled the fuse on the defroster and its late so i didn't get to pull the switch i have done a little diag work there is power going to the alternator so the battery is good it just gets drained prematurely and then it kills the ignition system cause there's no voltage and the battery is brand new

Re: Charging system!!!

How did you verify the Alternator getting power? Alternator's make the power when the engine is running, and recharges the battery after the car is started. Power you're getting is from the battery.
I would like to believe your voltage regulator is shot in the alternator, or worse the alternator is dead. Do you have a local shop where you can do a test on the alternator? The battery is supposed to last long enough (30-60 minutes) to drive a car with a bad alternator to a shop.
Get it tested and let us know. It might give off power, but not enough to charge the system and the battery.

Re: Charging system!!!

well i pulled the plug from the voltage regulator from the positive side of the battery and did a voltage test so i could have come to the wrong conclusion with that test so i'll do more diag with it and give you more info.

Re: Charging system!!!

Unless you're looking for a learning experience, stop wasting your time and drive your car to NAPA, Auto Zone, O'Reilley's, Pep Boys, or any other auto parts store near you. Ask them to check your charging system. They should be able to do this right there in the parking lot, usually for free.

Re: Charging system!!!

If the alt is putting out around 14 volts then your battery is probably not holding the charge which means the battery is on it's way out.It might read 12 volts but doesn't have the amperage anymore. Or........You have a drain on the system everytime you shut it off like me. Go to Autozone and get a positive terminal quick disconnect for 5 bucks. I did.

Re: Charging system!!!
