Batter light keeps coming on when in low rmps

Just finished my motor swap on my 91 lude (b21a1) 3 months ago and now my battery light is starting to come on when I'm in low rpm's, I have a new battery and a rebuilt alternator last summer. The lude has a fan witch put in and I had left it on for 20 mins while it was off and it killed my battery so I got it bosted and it ran but after that the light was coming on.. I did a volt test on it and it was low (9.40)so I charged it up and got (12.80) it was starting up fine but the light stayed on. I also did a test on my alt and it was charging it with 11.** volts so I figured that it wasn't the alt, so now I'm looking for a blown fuse and I can't find any. Is there anything else I can check out that could me making the light keep comin on? Im thinking it's just the alt before I go spend the money I wanna check some more things out, all coments are appreciated thanks!

With the engine running at idle, The voltage off the big stud in the front of the alternator should put out 13.60 to 14.25 volts. If not then you need a new alternator. It's gotta put out more voltage than the battery.

Re: Batter light keeps coming on when in low rmps

Ok so did a old test with my alt, taking the pos cable off the battery while the car is running and if the car stays running when you take the cable off the post its not the altotnator. And when I did it my lude stayed running. My lude wouldn't start at all this morning, the battery was right dead..? Idk how it can just die like that over night? But I put my battery on a charger this afternoon and I'm gonna check it in the morning see if its just discharged.

Re: Batter light keeps coming on when in low rmps

You still need to check the voltage coming out of the alternator. After the alternator craps out, The engine and all components run off the 12 volt battery till you get to about 7 or 8 volts then your car will usually die. If the alternator is putting out 13 or 14 volts then your battery is shot and won't hold a charge. But remember, If the alt. is putting out 13 or 14 volts , your battery better be reading almost the same while running. Get a voltmeter. If the battery isn't reading close to the alt. voltage then you have a different problem with the voltage going back to the battery to keep it charged above 12 volts. So you see that disconnecting the battery while running won't tell you if your alt. is charging the battery. The alt could be putting out 10 volts and your car will run but it has to be over 12 volts to charge the battery. Get a voltmeter. Remember too that when you disconnect the battery while running, the voltage from the alt has nowhere to send the voltage and that sometimes ruins the alternator.

Yeah, the charging system should always be greater than the battery voltage. Otherwise it won't sink any charge to the battery. Your battery indicator comes up when the voltage drops to about 12 VDC. If you put a 10 A load on your battery the current should not drop more than 0.5 VDC.

Re: Batter light keeps coming on when in low rmps

Believe it or not, I had a 79 gmc truck that was reading 18 volts because my battery ground was loose as hell.

Re: Batter light keeps coming on when in low rmps

Remember, An alternator is supposed to put out around 14.25 volts cause it has to charge the battery. Perfectly normal. The only way to charge a 12 volt battery is to charge it with a higher voltage. It's been that way for decades.
