Is this Overpriced?

Hello peoples!

I've been looking at buying a used 1990 Prelude SR and I was hoping you guys could help me out.

Basically, it's at 220,000km, a manual transmission, and for $1500.

I read that the timing belt and water pump were some pretty important things so I asked the guy, and he said he replaced them 60,000km ago.

There's also a bit of rust on the strip underneath the doors. Not along the whole bottom strip, just at the corners nearest the wheels.

So basically, what do you guys think about this price and how long it'll probably last? And what else should I ask him about, and check about the car before buying?

Thanks!

You think so? My greatest worry is the rust really. I mean, like if there's rust on the skirts, then there's probably tons of rust on the under carriage, pipes, and possibly engine and stuff right?

Re: Is this Overpriced?

It is recommended that you change the timing belt and water pump at about 60,000 miles so if he did it around 60,000 kilometers ago you still have about 37,000 kilometers left to go but I would change them anyways.

Tell him $1200.00 and then use the extra $300.00 to do the maintenance.

In the trunk? Like.."in" the trunk? See the thing is, if it's just rust on the skirts, I was wondering how much I could get skirts for it. Like cheapest (fitted and painted). I spent all day looking and I can't really find skirts for the 3rd gen, or anything for that matter.

Re: Is this Overpriced?

That's too much, at least in my area it's too much. I can pick rust free 3rd gens for $1500 - $1700 around here. It really depends on the amount if rust the car has. Pics would be better than a description. But it sounds like you have rust in the rocker panels. Chances are that if there is rust in that area there will also be rust in the wheel well arches/quarter panels. It's possible that these areas have rusted and been repaired. Also look for rust around all the glass and the fuel filler door.

I can't really tell you what I think the car is worth without knowing how much rust there is. The fact that you mentioned it means it's significant enough to bring the price down. People tend to downplay rust, especially when selling a car. But I can tell you from my own experience with it, rust is a very bad thing to have to deal with. Especially if the metal is rusted through at all.

There are not side skirts for the 3rd gen. Period.

I am working on making aftermarket side skirts but those are for looks, and will not solve your rust issue.

You are probably talking about the rocker panels that are part of the body, and are discontinued. You will need to have a professional body and paint cut it all out replace with new sheet metal.

Re: Is this Overpriced?

Ah, well that sucks. Okay well I'll try to get pics next time the guy is available. I just really want this, 'cuz it's a prelude! He also mentioned through text that it burns oil. Is that a major issue?

Re: Is this Overpriced?

when he says it burns oil. how much are we talking here? Is it all the time or just when you first start it up? There are many varibles to consider if it burning any oil at all as to if it is a major issue. I had a '89 SI that only burned it when it first started up. Totaled it out before i could fix the problem thanks to a deer, but it ran fine and had 300k on the odo. But i talked the guy down because of that. In my honest opinion, if it was me, i would offer him 1000-1200 for it just by what i have heard. If it is burning oil it has probably been ran hard and if there is rust you have to know the extent of the rust, just like everyone is saying. Once again, this is just my opinion. good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Is this Overpriced?

Okay well I bought it haha.

So I got some pictures, of the rust and what not.

As for the burning oil, he said that it goes through about half a liter every month? That's pretty bad...$2-4 a month? =(

I've read that there's seals and filters you can clean and tighten? I took a look but I'm a noob at this stuff. Also I'm looking at some thicker oil, but I don't want to wreck the engine with too think oil right?

Haha, last question! Where do I start in making my 'lude as cool as your guys'!

Edit: My embedded isn't working? So.. http://imgur.com/a/lZSFs

Thanks for all your help!!

Re: Is this Overpriced?

congrats on the buy. how much is a liter compared to a quart? I used to use about a quart every 6-8weeks. but i had major issues there toward the end. i had a bad rear main seal i believe and was burning it so it didn't help. as for fixing the problem, u have to find out what the actual problem is. are the valve seals gone? piston rings fried? or what is wrong. then you can decide on what the fix is. I can't speak for everyone, but if i had another one, i would do wheels, window tint, and then maybe lower it a little bit. but if you lower it idk if you can do the H22 swap like alot of 3rd gen owners are doing. I wish you luck in your venture. I cannot view pix at work so i can't see what your working with. but as long as it runs good you have good car to make into something NICE.

Re: Is this Overpriced?

Thanks! The problem is I have no idea where these "valve seals" or "piston rings" are. I dunno where to look and I don't have the manual haha.

Re: Is this Overpriced?

well, i'm not a mechanic, but i know piston rings are inside the block if i remember correctly. lil bit of a pain to replace... valve seals are either in the head or the block, i cannot remember about this. do some research, there is plenty out here on how to do this. the principle is basically the same with almost all cars if i am not mistaken. If i'm wrong, please someone correct me. I don't want to tell this person the wrong thing. you might even get lucky and do a search on youtube on how to replace valve seals/seats and piston rings... idk. like i said i ain't been able to do this yet. i totaled mine out just before i was going to work on it.
