Smog test. Help please.

My 1990 si didn't pass smog test too much pollution is being made. Anyone know what the problem could be? It does have an aftermarket exhaust which im thinking is the problem. would going to the junky and getting a stock exhaust fix the problem. thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Smog test. Help please.

How would an upgraded exhaust affect the amount of nox, hc or co in the fumes? There can be a problem with the cat, timing, or just general maintenance has been neglected.

Click here, you might come up with a solution.

These.

Could be a few different things as well. Are you throwing any check engine lights? If not, I would still hook a reader up to it because it is possible that the bulb blew (though unlikely) and certain things with the EGR and other components can effect your smog. Also since you said your car has an "upgraded" exhaust, are you running a catalytic converter? Do you know how to tell if you are?

If not that would be your problem. Also if you have a hole in the exhaust your car may be running "UNDER" the amount of hydrocarbons that are usually there. They can tell when your car has an exhaust leak usually unless it's small. Check those things first and get back to us.

Re: Smog test. Help please.

Hope you have the print out for the test. Hc or too high hydrocarbon is from a bad catalytic convertor. It's not burning off the unused fumes. Too high Co2 is from bad oxygen sensors. Too high Nox is from the egr valve not working or intake manifold is clogged. That's pretty much a straight forward diagnosis. Still need to see what you failed. Take a pic and post it.
