Icon5 Speedometer problem (Not VSS)

Hello,
Iím new here & havenít had a chance to introduce myself. I have a 90í Prelude Si, 5spd. The speedometer & odometer have both stopped working at the same time. I replaced the speed sensor with one brand new from eBay motors but the speedometer or odometer did not start working again.

I took it to a mechanic and he said it was likely that the drive gear that spins the joint shaft (the little pin that spins inside the sensor) is broken and isnít spinning, but there was no way to tell 100% because he canít observe it when the car is moving. What do you think the problem could be? Do you think I just received a faulty speed sensor & should just suck it up and buy another or is there another problem hiding somewhere that Iím not aware of? Iím sorry to post another speedometer thread but when I searched I was unable to find someone with a problem other than the VSS.

I think it may be a faulty VSS...

Re: Speedometer problem (Not VSS)

Is there anyway to make a VSS for a 92 lude fit it? I think I read somewhere on here that someone made one work on there 3rd gen. A new VSS for a 3rd gen is like 50$ & a 4th gen is 8$

Re: Speedometer problem (Not VSS)

could very easily be the drive gear on the bottom of the vss assembly, the whole thing will come out of the transmission, actually if i remember correctly its only held in by one bolt, i think i also remember it being a straight pain in the a$$

So I don't have to take the transmission out? The whole drive gear assembly will just unbolt from the top? Are there any diagrams or write-ups on it?

Re: Speedometer problem (Not VSS)

I think the manual trans vss is different from the automatic. Did they ask you which trans you had before getting it? Mine was a pain only cause there are two lines on it that go to the power steering rack or something.

Re: Speedometer problem (Not VSS)

@Prelude13 : Well I'm not entirely sure it's the speed sensor itself but rather the whole assembly responsible for spinning the small joint shaft pin- the drive gear. I've replaced the speed sensor myself before :)

@Lespaul59 : I made sure I ordered the sensor for the standard transmission (as that's what my lude is)
