B21 spun bearing

Well as the title states, my little project / DD spun a bearing today. I was on my way to Walmart to grab some Mobil 1 after grabbing my K&N filter at Advanced and the car started knocking on the highway. So I pulled it over and shut it off instantly and checked the dipstick after about 20 minutes of sitting so I could get an accurate reading. It read just below the full mark but the dipstick also showed my biggest realized fear. Shavings all over it. Im thinking that the oil pump **** out and starved the motor. So now Im at a crossroads. The car needed alot of work before all this happened and now that I need a new motor (which the closest B21 is in Dubois, PA...Im in Pittsburgh) I really dont know if keeping the car is worth it anymore. I know I havent been an avid member on here but the car really has gotten under my skin and I developed a fondness for the little classic Honda. So as of now Im driving my baby and the Prelude will sit until I decide if I should sell it, or dig my hole even deeper.

Re: B21 spun bearing

Sorry to hear about that. One of my biggest fears is being out driving and having the engine break like that. I guess that's why I have a spare engine and transmission sitting in my garage. But don't get rid of the car just because of a bad engine. Depending on what you meant when you said "The car needed alot of work before all this happened", it might be worth fixing. Especially since you're so attached to it. I'm assuming that it's 4ws judging by your avatar. You have a lot of options now, and aren't limited to using a b21a1. You can pick up a b20a5 or b20a and use that instead. You also won't have to deal with the same oil burning issues that most b21a1's have. You can also bore the b20 to 83mm and use the b21 pistons so that you have the same displacement. And there is always the h22/h23 swap.

Re: B21 spun bearing

If you can drive something else, you can go to Patterson NJ and get a B20A and use the block. Also do the 60K interval changes, and voila! working prelude. Last time I checked, it was 1500, for the motor, might be less. What was the "to do list" before the spun bearing?

Re: B21 spun bearing

Wow, big list. Lets see, it has the typical Honda cancer spots, but theyre not too bad. Theres one straight panel on the car. It needs a new fender, hood and windshield. The back quarters looks like.somebody wrecked it pretty good and did shadetree sub par bodywork. It needs paint, no clear left pretty much. Motor mounts, clutch, exhaust, rear window (Walmart tint killed the grid), alot of the interior panels. My door panels are cracked and falling apart where the map pockets are. It needs new bushings for the sagging doors and 2 CV axles. Possibly a rear wheel bearing as well. I wanted to try and restore the car back to that factory look. Whoever had it before me beat it to hell and back and riced it out pretty decent. So its quite a big list. I found a B20 in Pittsburgh, so I may grab that and have it bored out to accept the 21 pistons so I can have a B21 w/o the FRM sleeves. I just hope Im making the right decision with this car that I picked up for 400 bucks with the original intention of having it as a winter beater. But it grew on me. So now I need to find a 3rd car, this time one that I hate. A Cavalier.

Re: B21 spun bearing

you have prelude in your blood, there is no turning back. Park it and take your time fixing her. Check craigslits, ebay and the JDM engine sites for deals on a motor. I've seen them as cheap as $500...

Don't let it die, fix that lude squilly!

p.s. if I see another 3rd gen in the scrap yard, I'm going to start murdering kittens.

Hey Squilliam,
I'm not sure if this is feasible for you or not but there is a b21a1 motor and tranny on Craigslist here in The Pacific Northwest, you could call the guy up an see if you could ship it? He is only asking 650 for both and it's out of a 90si.
Dunno if this helps any, Sorry If I'm sub-par on these forums, this is my first post.
Here's the link anyhow. Good luck with the lude!

Re: B21 spun bearing

It all depends on how much money you're willing to spend and if you really wanna keep the car. Most JDM sites have low mileage B20A's for 650-900 bucks. Low mileage is a plus. No ring ridge. Plus they have 9.4 compression instead of the lower USDM engines.Used engines on craigslist are cheaper but they will be high mileage.
