89 si wont fire up

So about a week or so ago I picked up a 89 prelude for about 500 bucks, and when I got it he said it was running fine when he parked it, he just got in to drifting and such, so I cleaned everything up, saw it had a code for a AIT sensor, which the wires had been pulled out, so I fixed that and put a good set of plug wires on it and proceeded to try and start it, it hit a time or two on some cylinders but won't completely fire up. So I put a different coil on and it didnt change. I checked to make sure all the cylinders where getting fuel and spark and I've just a dead end. What else could I check ill post a video of what it sounds like turning over when ever my fone decideds to upload it.

Re: 89 si wont fire up

Check the basics. You need three things in order for the engine to run...spark, air/fuel mixture, and compression. If you have fuel and spark, check the compression to make sure the timing belt is intact and hasn't slipped. Depending on the mileage, you should see compression numbers around 160 to 180 psi. The main thing to check is that all four are within 5 psi or so of each other. Make sure you pull all four spark plugs out and hold the throttle to the floor when checking the compression.

The other thing is fuel. How long has that gas been in the tank? Does it smell "bad", or normal?

Re: 89 si wont fire up

Now it's running ok? I would seriously consider putting a new belt on that thing asap. You are lucky that you didn't bend any valves when the t belt slipped. you probably know that these are interference engines, and if that thing slips again you might not be so lucky. And while you're in there, make sure to also replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump.
