Icon5 CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

Hello Everyone,

I am throwing a CEL that is code 12 which is the EGR recirculation system. I have the EGR plugged into the harness and placed a block off plate from the intake manifold as well as from the EGR tube. The OBX header that I bought I forgot to place a bung on there so I removed the EGR tube since I didn't want the exhaust fumes coming into the engine bay.
Why am I throwing a CEL? SHould I place the EGR tube back on or is my EGR just bad? Can I rebuild it or do I need to buy a new one?

Thanks

Chris

That's strange cause my egr doesn't work for some stupid reason and it doesn't throw a code.

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

I was told once that the code is thrown if it doesn't sense the diaphragm moving up or down.Mine is always down cause it doesn't work but still no code.Need someone to tell me what voltage runs through those three wires or ohms.

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

its throwing a cel because the egr sensor detects the valve opening and closing...since you dont have the vacuum hose on its not opening the egr valve like it should...so to get rid of the code u need to put the vacuum line back on.

and Lespaul59 remember to check the egr vacuum solenoid you may need a new one...unless your egr diaphragm has a hole in it the valve will open and close... i said you may need a new one but what i did was just bought a used one from a 94 accord off ebay for 45 instead of $100 something...just make sure the seller gives you some kind of warranty

Hello ,

Thanks for the suggestions but I had the vaccumm hose on there and when the CEL was still on I just took it off so I am guessing it is the egr vacuum solenoid.

If I place the EGR tube back on won't exhuast fumes get into my engine bay or not???

Thanks

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

I went through three vacuum solenoids. Still no vacuum. If you put 12 volts on one side and ground the other, you'll hear it clicking open and close. But when the car is running it doesn't open or close. Also went through three ecm's. Still baffled.

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

if you have a good seal between the egr valve and the mount then exhaust wont enter the engine bay. but also next to egr valve is this green cylinder that regulates the vacuum to to the solenoid... make sure all these lines are connected especially 24, 16, and the line that runs from the cvc to the egr solenoid..if all lines are connected and no holes in the lines then you man want to check to make sure your cvc is working...by the way the cvc sits right next to the egr solenoid and green and white

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

i'VE CONNECTED AND DISCONNECTED THAT GREEN AND WHITE THING. iT'S REALLY JUST TO KEEP THE PRESSURE FROM SPIKING. sORT OF A BALLAST.Still won't work for some reason. If you suck on the vacuum line going to the egr, The engine dies instantly. So that works normal but the egr solenoid isn't opening to allow vacuum to get to the egr. Remember, three ecm's, three vacuum solenoids, and two map sensors. Still not getting vacuum to that damn egr valve.

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

well i guess the only option is a new/used egr valve the sensor may be bad if you didnt change it already. and if you have access to a service manual do the test on the egr sensor before you buy one...

I dont know of anything else to check..Good luck

Re: CEL? CODE 12, EGR Recirculation System

Thanks! The diaphragm on the egr is perfect and stays up with suction but you never know. I'll change out the egr in August when I need emissions and will let you guys know.
