1989 2.0 si, power surge on freeway!

Was driving a friend's 1989 Prelude 2.0 si, she recently had the alternator and battery replaced by another friend.
I was noticing that when you accelerate quickly, the battery light would go on.
I took it on the freeway, got up to 65 and about 3 miles in I hear electricity crackling, I smell acrid smoke and every dummy light comes on. Then, more crackling, smoke came out of the radio and it was dead.
Towed it home and replaced battery fuse and alternator fuses which were blown. Alternator spins freely, it's not seized up and all belts are still attached.
The new battery is dead but if I try to jump start, engine won't start. Does everything but turn over.
Any thoughts? What blew on the freeway? Regulator? Alternator? something else?
What should I look for now? Ignition, another fuse or starter?
Any help appreciated.

The battery supplies power to the starter which gets the engine going, which runs the alternator, which keeps the engine going without using the battery and keeping it charged at the same time.

Sooo...if the car is getting electricity when you hook up the jumpers (lights, dash, etc..), but does not turn over or even attempt to do so, I would look at the starter and everything wiring and fuse related first.

I musta skipped that sentence.

Check EVERY fuse. When you turn the key to the Accessory, does anything work at all?

I have checked all fuses that I have found and all electricity seems to come on when jump started. Dings, flashes dummy lights etc.
Is there any way to check a starter without removing it?
