alternator

I'm just about to upgarde my sound system and the battery cant handle it. It struggles now as it is and im going to add 2 more amps. im thinking about putting another battery in my boot but I need a bigger alternator (i think). Are there any other ones that would fit in my car? (1989 3rd gen)

Cheers

Uh.... why do you say your battery can't handle it? Just get a cap.... or... just turn your music down a little. I don't know if you've tested your hearing lately, but I can't hear much at all above 16khz anymore, due to concerts and loud music when I was younger.

Yup, either a capacitor or another battery in the trunk y0!!!

BUMP that system dano! :becky:

I dont think a stronger alternator will help you out with a monster system...the next best upgrade to our stock alternators is the 94-97 Accord alternator which fits as well.

There is places that rebuild your alternater for a stronger one. There is one by my house down in san antonio but im currently not there. I would of taken it down there for you but you might want to do some research on it and im sure you can find a place!!!!

Yea, I say a high amp/output alternator is the best way to upgrade anytime you are dealing w/ large systems. An extra battery and/or cap will help but only to manipulate how the power is distributed throughout the entire vehicle. A new alternator will actually produce MORE power/amperage. I had to do some searching a while back but there are websites that sell high-amp alternators. Almost all of them are for US domestic but I found a couple that make them for preludes. They run about $300 give or take so make sure you get one that has AT LEAST 120 amps plus, otherwise you are just wasting time and money.

This is the best i could do for you for now!!! There is this website called prelude3g.com and i found some information that you might find useful. A way to gain 20amps on your stock 70amp alternator and the alternator only cost $100. here is the whole article of it........

Today at work had to have been the slowest day ever. So I had a lot of time on my hands. For those who don't know, I work at AutoZone. I posted a while back about how the 90-93 accord alternator will bolt on our cars, and yes it still does. But I looked up a 94 accord EX and there was one even cheaper for 99.99 and it had 90amps instead of the stock 70 on the Prelude. The only difference on the alternator on the 94 is the pulley it has 6 groves instead of 5 like the prelude. So all you have to do is switch pulleys and on the prelude alternator there are threads Tapped into the small ear on the alternator where it mounts and on the accord there are no threads. So all you need is a bolt and a nut and you have a 90amp alternator instead of the 70 and its about 40 dollars cheaper. By the way the 90-93 accord alternator has 80amps and does not require a pulley swap, but does need the bolt and nut for the small ear. Everything else like plug location and style are all the same. Even the actual alternator case is the same. Just some extra info and a better deal. You can even go look for your self, go to AUTOZONE and ask for these alternator part numbers 14853 is the prelude and 13218 is the 94 accord alternator. Have them pull it off the shelf and then compare them. These are AUTOZONE part numbers they wont work at any other parts store.

sorry for not replying sooner some workmen cut through my phone line so no internet or phone. all sorted now though.

The problem I have is that my stereo will reset due to lack of power. Do you think adding a couple of new caps will sort this out or am I going to have to get another battery and better alternator.

Thanks

Anyways, on with the forum. I'm surprised you found such a specialty part for a 3rd gen on ebay. This actually looks like a good deal being that it has a 1 year warranty and it all. good price, lots of power. I say go for it.

check all of the grounds first. A bad ground is the number one symptom for components resetting. Lack of power generally will blow fuses first b/c there is always more than enough juice for them NOT to pop before the equipment is affected. If the amps are resetting, check your speakers' resistance. make sure your impedence isn't too low.

Well, it's not too big for my machine/connection, it just seems gigantic compared to most forums I go to.

It's more of the 'principle' I guess. I don't think sigs should be close to a meg. If anything, they should be under 100k, so the page loads as quickly as possible. I have a Core2Duo 2.33ghz with lots of ram and a fast connection, but I can still tell that sig is huge just due to the animation. Without it, the page would probably load .3 seconds faster, which ... which does matter for someone who cares about speed.
