shift linkage problems....

ok. I havent taken it apart YET but am planning on it w/in the next week. I thought I'd ask the experts 1st.

the problem:

shifting from gear to gear it shifts rough. meaning it sticks and is hard to get into gear.

I saw on ebay shift linkage parts, just not sure what I need to fix this problem.

oh, its a 90 s 5spd-kinda helps to know what I have

Re: shift linkage problems....

Does it go into gears easily when the car is not running? If it does then its probably not the linkage. Did you bleed the clutch slave cylinder and check the trans gear oil level? Usually when the clutch is really worn that will make it very difficult to get in gear.

When it's not running its the same story. & no, I haven't checked the levels. But will this weekend. I just bought it about a week ago (my 2nd gen3).

Re: shift linkage problems....

The manual transmission does not have a stick.. There is a fill bolt on the tranny that you remove to check the fluid level.

Look up the tranny diagram in the manual for reference.

Re: shift linkage problems....

If it does it without the car running, then 99% that its in the linkage. What work has been done on your car, as linkage doesn't tend to just normally go bad by itself?

Re: shift linkage problems....

I have no idea what work has been done. I bought the lude off of craigslist & the guy wasnt sure what was done by the p.o. before him. it runs like a champ, just has this problem w/the shifting.

Re: shift linkage problems....

Before I'd go replacing random parts, take it to a reptuable transmission shop and see what they say, could be linkage problems or tranny issues...is it all gears or specific to one or two gears?

Re: shift linkage problems....

Hey if you think the cables could be the problem you can remove them from the transmission and see if it's still hard to shift.. Not sure if this is a valid idea but makes sense to me. :)

Re: shift linkage problems....

It's all gears. Was hoping it was something I could fix & easily spotted in the gen3s.

Re: shift linkage problems....

Sorry to hear that. Every once in a while I see a 3rd gen tranny on Craigslist for under 200. Might be worth keeping an eye out for one.
