timing belt

I have a 91 prelude that im doing the timing belt on, im just replaceing the belt it never broke i just wanna save time down the road. Now my belt tensioner wont keep my belt tight enough to keep it in time and from skipping over my cams. I thought my belt was to long but its the same length as my old one. the spring for my tensioner is conected to the little pin on the side of the block and the tensioner but i still have lots of play in between my cams and on the front of the belt.. what am i doing wrong?

Re: timing belt

Got mine at O'reileys. After you put the belt on and turn the engine a good turn or two to set the tension.... Then tighten the tensioner. Actually you just need to rotate the engine enough to take the slack out of the belt before tightening the tensioner.

Re: timing belt

Need to have someone hold the gas pedal all the way down before turning the engine over to check compression so the cylinder can get air. It should be at least 120-190PSI. If you don't get that then either your guage is screwed up or you've got some bent valves. You will still have to adjust the valves first with a feeler guage cause they might not be even opening to allow air in.

Re: timing belt

Running rough and low compression.... your timing belt is off by a coupla teeth, which is slightly keeping the valves open which is where the compression is going, and why it obviously isn't running right.

go back and double check the timing belt. i've done that before
