Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

Alright guys I need your advice this problem is getting to me that I cant figure it out. A little background, I am very knowledgeable with cars and how they work and all that, but my experience is with anything American and older than 1980 basically.
The Problem: This is a 1988 Prelude with a 2.0 SI B20A, its got about 112,000 miles on it. Just recently it started giving me trouble starting, regardless of whether its cold or hot. It will turn over, sound like its about to start idle, meaning rev up to about 1200 and then come straight back down and die. Then I can keep cranking and it wont start. Then if I let it sit, sometimes for a minute or two, sometimes for 15, it will start and idle fine.
So I first thought maybe I wasn't getting any fuel pressure, but whenever it happens I listen to make sure that the fuel pump is priming to ensure operation. I could also think it may be an ignition problem, but it would have to be something that would only effect start up, and not when its running because like i said it runs and idles smoothly. Could it be the master relay maybe it is intermittently going out? Or Ignition module?
I hope somebody can shed some light on this issue for me, or give me an idea of somethings to check. I know there are ways of checking the relay and all that the only problem is that the majority of the time everything works fine, so it would be pointless (or at least I figured). Sorry for the lengthy post I just figured the more details the better. I hope I described myself well enough

Re: Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

Ok cool so I can rule that out I think. I forgot to mention things Ive recently replaced: spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributor, and rotor. This problem has been happening before I replaced all of that, and still happens with it all replaced. Any other ideas?

Have u checked your injectors? And did you gap your plugs? Takes fuel, spark, air and timing to start

Re: Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

Yes they are gapped correctly and I also just recently replaced the injector O-rings and seals, one was leaking a little. But i figured it would have to leak a whole lot for it to affect fuel pressure like that, but theyre not leaking anymore. I think if an injector was going to fail it would fail, I dont think it would work most of the times and then not work for like a minute.

No check engine light, like I said it starts and runs perfectly the majority of the time.

Re: Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

Most likely the Main relay. It has an important job of sending voltage to the fuel pump. Mine did the same. Think it was 80 bucks at autozone. Unless you own a soldering gun and wanna re solder the cracked solder joints.

I would replace the main relay because its more than likely your issue. This is the main issue with all Honda's and especially a 24 year old car.

Re: Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

So you guys are saying the main relay could go out intermittently like that? I guess that'll be the next thing to replace.

Yes this is a well known and common part to go bad. That is why the first few posts where MAIN RELAY.

Re: Very Intermittent Start Up Problem

One way to tell is turn the key to ON position but don't start. The lights and dummy lights will all come on but after three seconds.... The check engine light should go out. If it doesn't then it's your main relay. That's only when you're having your starting problems. Check it out and see. Good luck.
