Re: Bought an 89 si for a beater. couple questions

You have a b20a5 (2.0 liter), and it uses 2 single wire o2 sensors. The person at the parts store was looking up a part for a b21a1 (2.1 liter) which uses a single 4 wire o2 sensor. Just make sure to tell them that it's a 2.0 liter.

The reservoir is for the power steering fluid, and the hose goes to the power steering pump, which looks to be missing on your car.

So I guess you didn't IMMEDIATELY notice that the car didn't have power steering as soon as you started moving? haha

unless that is the car isn't even drivable yet...

but yes it appears that your PS pump is missing.

As I told you on pp.com, those wires look hacked.

Its either you have a B21a1 engine harness, or the previous owner did some very lousy splicing for whatever reason?

You need a luder who knows what their looking for to come over and help you rrack down the correct plugs in the engine bay, or you may need to clean up the wiring yourself.

He might have even tried to do a OBD0 to OBD1 conversion?

What a mess?????......
You need to do some serious wire tracing to figure out where the proper wires are if they broke off.

Such an abused 4WS... Get your money back, it used to be red. I've tried to fixed hacked harness cars, its not worth it. Go to a junk yard and start pickin'. I welcome you to ask us questions, but search for some answers and I wish you the best of luck.

I take back what I said on prelude power. I wouldn't put money into this, it needs too much work, I was thinking it was just neglected in the maintenance dept. not destroyed. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

Wait, lemmie find it...

Unless you deleted it. But why? That's how you get the estimated highway mpg!
5w-30 is the best all around oil, all year round. (IMO, not to start an oil conversation, for every grade ever made)

Re: Bought an 89 si for a beater. couple questions

Turbo needs a little thicker, being 248496352703826 times hotter than NA engines. I'd say 15w-40, but I'm being extreme, lol

the turbos for the rsx

i was just wondering if even worth it to switch over to synthetic on the prelude. it appears that it has conventional oil in it

Re: Bought an 89 si for a beater. couple questions

I use synthetic in my prelude (Penzoil Platinum 5w-30). I'm sold on the fact that synthetic oil flows better in cold weather, reducing damage during cold start, not to mention the reduced sludge you get with synthetic (cleaner engine). But I only recommend using it if your engine doesn't use a lot of oil. If you have a few small leaks, they'll probably get worse with synthetic.

Re: Bought an 89 si for a beater. couple questions

well i went to the local pick and pull today and got a alternator, ps pump and o2 pigtails... i just tried swapping the alternators out, got it all in except the alternator connectors (big green plug) wouldnt fit...come to find out I probably got the wrong alternator. The carbureted "S" model uses a 3 pin connection, where the "SI" models use a 4 pin.

also, come to find out I had an alternator in the trunk of the lude this whole time... major facepalm.. so I took the original alt and the one in the trunk to autozone. sure enough, 1 was bad 1 was good. came back home. put the good one and viola.

now the car is running again but now my headlights wont turn on!!

they came on the first day I bought the car. and now they wont come on at all.. i checked the fuses. (even jacked all the fuses from the two ludes at the junk yard just so I can have a ton of fuses if i ever need them lol..)

bulbs burnt out maybe?? i dont even know how to get to the bulbs..

Here's a pic of the new o2, plugged into the pigtail. I'm pretty it connects to those two black wires.. I just need another pigtail and soldering I go

also, as you can see I found a coolant temp sensor today too.. i screwed it in, plugged it with the blue but my temp gauge inside the car still doesnt work. havent tried switching to the brown plug. would it matter?

Re: Bought an 89 si for a beater. couple questions

Most of those lines have a pull out fuse, so have some 20,25,30 laying around in case. Also you can do a live wire test with a 6/12 volt tester. Ground the clip, check the brown wire to see if it's hot! Easy peasy. Those light switch assemblies go all the time, mine only raised the headlights, the tail lights would stay off, minus braking. 30min swap!

Kinda glad you're prelude was not disappoint. Those cars need loads of TLC!
