Fixed - Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

Are there any common problems that would cause the brake light fuse under the hood to blow on an 89?

I noticed tonight that my brake lights were out and the fuse was blown. I replaced it and the lights started working, but after hitting the brakes a few times the fuse blew again.

Re: Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

if u installed a new stereo deck most likely you connected a red/black wire that has current unplug that wire and make sure it gets properly blocked off as in electrical taped around the tip of it

or if you didnt install a new stereo either way look at the stereo wiring because that red/black wire must either be coming in contact with metal

thats the usal culprit

Where are the grounds associated with the brake lights and horn yo?

The PO put in an aftermarket head unit. I'll check that wiring, thanks.

Does that red/black wire have constant power? I tried pulling the brake light bulbs and with the key out hit the brakes a few times and the fuse still popped.

Re: Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

Here's some more info - I put a fuse in with the brake bulbs out and just waited without touching anything. Within a minute the fuse popped. I ran out of 20A and was using a 15A for that test.

I guess there is a short somewhere on a wire with constant power?

Re: Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

Where is the horn located on these cars? What would be the best way to disable it to verify it's not the problem?

I'll have time to dig into this again today and will update the thread with the results.

Re: Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

Success! The terminals on the passenger side horn were so rusty they pulled right out of the horn with a tug on the wires.

The horns are behind the bumper. I started to remove it, but it was a giant PITA and discovered the wires to that horn were reachable between two plastic panels under the car.

My car is a rusty winter beater with 200k of salty Wisconsin miles, so hopefully this doesn't happen to many other cars. The terminals on the passenger horn are aligned down towards the ground with more or less nothing between them and road funk. The driver's side terminals are not pointed down and probably less likely to rust out like this.

The horns don't work right now but almost no ****s were given. I remember trying to use the horn a few days ago and it sounding like death. That's probably when this problem started.

If someone has an extra horn for dirt cheap I'd be interested.

Re: Brake light / Horn fuse blowing

I may have a set of extras horns, but not at the moment.

My car had this same issue, it was the driver side horn had a short in it. I just recently discovered the placejust unplugged one of the connectors and electic taped it. That place will never get my business, theyve robbed me multiple times.

Anyways. I hope its all good now. If your interested in the horns lmk.
