Faulty Seatbelts

Hey all, I just bought an 89 Prelude Si with 4WS for $1600. It's a great little car, but the big issue is the seatbelts are TOTALLY POINTLESS. I click in the buckles, and make sure to push all the way in, but at the slightest pull, they just pop right out. Anybody know WTF is wrong with them? Should I buy new parts from the junkyard? Or can I take these apart and make them work somehow?

Thanks!

- Rob

PS: I'd post a pic but your gay ass rules won't let me.

I love it! :) It handles WAY WAY WAY better than my modified SVX.

That's a factory recall...your seatbelts/seatbelt buckle(s).

what happens is after all these years, a small piece of plastic will chip off inside the buckle, thus not locking or releasing the belt...

Take it to Honda, they will service it for FREE.

I had the same problem, sorta...my belts wouldn't POP OUT!

if Honda gives you flack about it, just tell them you will write a letter to Honda of Torrance California and you will report the dealership.

Between the recall on those specifically, and the lifetime seatbelt warranty, they should take care of it no problem. They may have to order the parts though. They had to order mine. Took about a week, and about an hour to install (as long as you show up on time for the appointment)

Don't let the dealer try and brush you off, if your buckle is not working, it is a recall and Honda Warranties it for life.

They didn't. The only issue was they couldn't find any black buckles in stock to replace them with, so my new buckles will be graphite.

I wish I could post pics of this thing. Anyway, I have a few other questions:

1. My sideview mirror jiggles. Not the whole thing, JUST the mirror part. The housing is solid. Any ideas?

2. Anything I should check, that commonly wears out on these things?

3. I ordered an older alpine CD deck, so it should look pretty factory. Does anybody make an alpine->honda adaptor?

4. I need black floormats. If anybody sees any at a junkyard for a reasonable price, snag em for me. They must be in great shape though, since the rest of my car is so clean.

There's black trim on the edge of the door, that's why it looks like it has a massive gap.

1)They all do that with age. Mine did it up until i replaced the mirrors with JDM power folding mirrors The problem with the jiggly mirrors is that behind the glass, there is 2 or 3 clips i dont remember that break off and dont fasten or sit correctly. Either you go to a junkyard and get a replacement or you can fold up a little piece of paper and jam it between the glass and housing so the mirror stays put. Dont worry, it's not only your Prelude that does this, all of my friends 3rd gens do the same.

2)--

3)No. In the other thread someone said they sell a universal harness. I told you, you should splice the wiring like everyone else does. No easy way out of this one

4)Nope. Get 5th gen Prelude floor mats instead. They look a lot better than the 3rd gen ones. BOTH again, are discontinued.

and nice Prelude, very clean for being a Wisconsin car; i see no rust!!

Weird. Your 1/4 panels don't line up either. I was worried that mine didn't line up becuase of an accident. What lip do you have on it? I really like that. I don't dig the painted moldings though, because I like contrast on boxier hondas. :)

BTW, here's my other 89 Honda: Accord LX 5spd with 257,000 miles. WooT!

Yes that does depend. I bought this car used, so I believe it was hit in the rear or they backed up to something and cause the bumper to misalign.

I personlly prefer the EURO look, it gives it a clean overall look. I kept my mirrors stock to give slight contrast.

That is the 1st gen Integra lip, you just need to heat the bend on the corners and then tap screw it to the bottom of front bumper.

Very nice. I like the modest spoiler.

We are only a state away cash.

Check out my topic (seat belt beeping) and look at my state away car.
