89 4ws si help

Ok, I'm about to start buying parts to start the project but I need to know a few things first.

First is how you would install a rear outer tie rod on this car, the dealers say you need special tools to lock the 4ws system.
Second, has anyone herd of blocking off the iacv? If so, how do you do it?
Third, I'm gonna be buying new rear bumper, drivers tail light, struts and springs. Where is a good place to buy these besides ebay? My local junk yard just smashed the lude I was gonna get all of my parts off of.

Thanks for all the help in advance

Re: 89 4ws si help

You don't need to lock the rear rack to change the tie rod end. The locking tool is used during the alignment after you replace steering or suspension components. Check with the alignment shop to make sure they have this tool and are familiar with the 4ws system before taking it in for the work.

I haven't blocked off the iacv, but I've read that some have. But it's not recommended if you live in a cold climate or you might have starting issues in the winter.

As far as parts go, for used you can hit junkyards, ebay, part-outs, craigslist, or Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market. For new parts, check with Honda Parts at Honda Parts Now | Genuine OEM Honda Auto Parts or your local Honda dealer. But some of the parts you mentioned have been discontinued.

Re: 89 4ws si help

Ah, another question I forgot to ask. The clutch is going out and I'm gonna need a new one soon, what is a good brond to buy from? I was looking into act but they are pretty expencive and spec has a wide range of clutchs (and even has a lightweight flywheel) for our cars but I have herd bad things about them. Any thoughts?

Re: 89 4ws si help

I have no experience with any clutches other than oem replacements. I use mine primarily for daily driving, and have never had any problems with them. If you aren't racing the thing, there's nothing wrong with going that route.

Re: 89 4ws si help

Heard good things about exedy and centerforce, alas sideswipe was automatic.

Main thing: tape off the rods and turning axle. Straighten the wheels, put in park, lock the wheel as close to center as possible. Use tape to mark off the key steering points. Take photo as a reminder how everything lined up.

Reinstalling without guides is a world of headache.

Re: 89 4ws si help

I don't know, I've never had a manual ever need a clutch. My current 6 speed only has 27k on the odometer. Also I have beefier options from the factory.

Wish I wasn't passing the buck, but never having a manual prelude long enough to change a clutch makes me biased...

If you plan on Racing this thing, then do yourself a favor and just drop the dime for the good stuff, don't mess around because you will just cost yourself more headache and more money in the end.

Fast, Relaible, Cheap - You can only choose two out of the three but you can never choose cheap as an option with the other two.

You have to pay to play.

Well I went to a junk yard out of town today and found me a motor. Its in an 88 prelude si and they only want 200 for it, so I'm gonna put my referbished head on it with a new clutch then at tax time I'm gonna do some more engine mods.

Re: 89 4ws si help

Depending on the engine, you might be better off with the engine from the 88 and using your refurbished head. You only said it's a 90, but what model? Si (b21a1) or 2.0Si (b20a5)? If it's the b20a5 it's a good find. If it's a b21a1 it's just getting to the mileage where it will start to use oil.

That's a good question. I wish i knew the answer. It probably has different gearing, but it should work just fine for you if that's what you have to use.

Well I ended up buying that motor along with a bunch of other stuff. All together I got an engine, front bumper, rear bumper, tail lights, front seats, rear seat, center arm rest, hood, and trunk lid. Spent 520 bucks all together, I'll post pics soon.

Re: 89 4ws si help

Centerforce is good for mainstream performance cars, like corvettes, camaros, 300xz, nsx, intergas. I dunno about 3rd gens.

Great pickup by the way, thought you were going 4WS instead. Still that motor looks nice and even the heat shield looks decent. Great job!

Nice parts! I could really use that hood, lol. Looks like you're planning to swap the tail lights out. Keep in mind that you'll want to make sure an seal up any openings after you modify the rear pan to make them fit.

The arm rest is pretty rare in the US. I had one in my car for a while but I didn't like it. I sold it to a member on another forum.

Re: 89 4ws si help

So I did not see it on the posts, but are you going to do a 90-91 Tail light swap on your 88?

If so, I highley recommend you go back for the rear panel of that 90 you pulled the trunk lid and tail lights off of. It is going to a bit more expensive, but you will at a complete rear panel swap that will allow you to bolt up the lights and have proper sealing and not a hack job like many do.

If you do not do it the right way, you will regret it in the end. Rust, leaking etc...
