89 prelude si b20a5 tach overreading?

Hello, late last night I was heading toward my girlfriends which is a good 25 minutes from where I live about half way through the tach was reading fine 3k at 60mph now it is reading 4200 at 60mph. The tac is entirely off what do you think could throw this off during driving?

wouldn't the distributor cause more problems than just the tac? I'm having no other problems.

I'd try a loaner distributor to double check.Hope you can get one. 3000 at 60 mph is about right.

Re: 89 prelude si b20a5 tach overreading?

What I am saying is how can a distributor cause a tach to malfunction?

It's probably got a reluctor gear like most vehicles.

Re: 89 prelude si b20a5 tach overreading?

It's in the distributor. It's basically a star wheel and a sensor or magnet reads every time a tooth passes by it.

Re: 89 prelude si b20a5 tach overreading?

exactlly, your tach reads of your spark which is caused by the distriubutor blah blahblah, same with a motorcycle blah blah blah, a bike runs off the coil wire from plug 1 and tells the rpm gauge how fast its rolling, just do it!
