clear plastic button protect from factory

'89 2.0 si, all of the button and switch surfaces, that are flat, came with a clear plastic film on them, from the factory, to protect the surface. I am assuming that the dealer was to remove the plastic at prep. my car still has this plastic on the buttons, and, of course, after 23 years, it has gotton cloudy, and seems to have adhered itself a lot more than when it was new.
some of the buttons have the plastic film warn, and you can see a nice new button beneath. i am looking for help as to how to remove this film without messing up the button itself.
anybody have this experience? i was thinking of trying a heat gun very slowly. using a sharp object will mar the button beneath the protetective film.
ideas?

Thanks for this my sunroof button on my 5g looks so much nicer now! Had always just assumed it was normal wear, my 4th gen sunroof button was the same way...but only the roof button...weird.

Do you guys recommend removing these if they don't look bad?
